As a Space Surveillance and Tracking (SST) Engineer, you will support Slingshot's efforts to accelerate the security, safety, and sustainability of space via the detection, tracking, identification, and characterization of satellites and space debris. At Slingshot, this involves (i) the development of ground- and space-based optical sensor technologies, (ii) the development of physics- and AI/ML-based algorithms and software, and (iii) the curation of data products from our global sensor network. SST Engineers will develop solutions across the gamut of tasking, collection, processing, exploitation, and dissemination (TCPED) stages of the space surveillance and tracking mission.
Responsibilities (may vary by individual)

  • Contribute to the direction of a talented team with your expertise and ideas
  • Develop algorithms and software to help automate and enhance optical sensor data tasking, collection, processing, exploitation, and dissemination
  • Exercise Slingshot's SST software using real-time and historical data, and perform quality assurance on its outputs (e.g., calibration activities)
  • Support ongoing and future transitions of Slingshot's SST products and services to the Slingshot Global Sensor Network (SGSN), space operations centers, and other technology testbeds
  • Contribute to SGSN improvement through development of SST sensor systems (e.g., optical telescope observatories) and simulation of SST sensor/network performance
  • Engage with our SST customers and other stakeholders to ensure successful outcomes for their mission-critical needs
  • Provide analytical and orbital analyst support to our SST customers and support SST-related training events
  • Prepare technical reports and briefing materials

Pre-Requisites

  • Must be eligible for U.S. Government security clearances, requiring U.S. citizenship

Required Background and Experience

  • Undergraduate degree in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, with 3+ years of relevant work experience and a record of academic excellence
  • Experience developing applications in Python and/or C++
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the demonstrated ability to convey salient details about advanced technology in a compelling manner to both experts and non-experts alike

Preferred Background and Experience

  • Graduate level degree in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field
  • Significant experience developing applications in Python and/or C++ with deployment experience in a Linux operating environment
  • Training or experience in fields such as image processing, algorithm optimization, software/hardware interfacing, embedded/GPU development, astrodynamics, estimation theory, statistical analysis, remote sensing, radiometry, and machine learning
