Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
Open to all faculty (PTK, TTK), reporting directly to the Senior Vice President and Provost, the Special Assistant to the Provost for Strategic Initiatives serves as a senior level administrator that will provide executive level direction for all programs and initiatives to advance the University of Maryland’s strategic plan.

Released in February 2022, the University of Maryland strategic plan, Fearlessly Forward: In Pursuit of Excellence and Impact for the Public Good, focuses on four broad pillars: reimagining learning, taking on humanity’s grand challenges, investing in people and communities, and partnering to advance the public good.

The Special Assistant to the Provost for Strategic Initiatives will lead with the following primary responsibilities related to the implementation of the Strategic Plan: (1) Work with the Provost’s senior leadership team, academic deans, and university vice presidents to develop and coordinate implementation of the strategic plan programs and initiatives; (2) Advise, support, assist, coordinate and collaborate on major projects for the Provost; (3) Develop and implement strategies to assess and manage new projects and initiatives, to include tracking and reporting; (4) Communicate strategic plan priorities and progress through a dynamic website and periodic reports for a variety of stakeholder groups; and (5) Assist departments with large scale plans on campus in areas of process improvement, organizational design, and other special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
A terminal degree in a relevant discipline.

Experience:
Five years leadership experience at a four-year institution of higher education.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Leadership and collaboration skills for developing, coordinating, implementing initiatives on a large, decentralized research campus.
  • Understanding of higher education trends and priorities.
  • Proven and demonstrable leadership acumen.
  • Understanding of and ability to facilitate evidence-based approaches to community engagement and involvement.
  • Ability to establish and track metrics associated with initiatives and provide clear reports assessing progress.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and persuasion skills.
  • Excellent problem-detection and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with diverse people across many campus units.
  • Ability to encourage a shift of the culture of a large research university toward greater adoption of new, creative approaches to how work is accomplished for the greater good.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion, and an understanding of best practices in engagement with a highly diverse community of students, staff, and faculty.

Organizational experience in project management and/or strategic planning are highly preferred.
