Under direct supervision, provides assistance to a special education classroom teacher, performing a variety of tasks relating to the physical and instructional needs of
disabled/children with special needs in a special education setting; assists in the implementation of classroom programs, including self-help and behavior management as well as instruction, personal, and therapy tasks. May be required to assist with medical needs of some students. In some settings may participate in the assignment and monitoring of an individual student.

Job Title: Special Education Assistant

Location: Elementary and Secondary vacancies (K-5 elementary, 6-8 middle school, 9-12 high school)

Hourly Wage: $16.50-$20.50 per hour (based on experience)

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The duties described below are indicative of what all special education assistants may be asked to perform. Not all activities are performed in each classroom. Other duties may be assigned.

• Assists in the planning, gathering and preparation (daily and long-term planning) of materials to be used by students in group or individual activities.
• Assists in organizing classroom materials & clean up for various curricular areas & helps develop related activity & learning centers, including visual aids.
• Assists students either individually or in groups in various activities, i.e., math, reading, speech, science, industrial arts, therapy, vocational training, basic skills,

feeding, adaptive physical education, learning centers, extra curricular activities, etc. Under the direction of the teacher, and/or case manager, assists students in adapting assignments either for the classroom or homework.

• Escorts & assists students at water fountain & bathroom; attend to personal hygiene of the student; assists with teaching personal hygiene practices.
• Transports, assists in lifting, moving and/or assists students in wheelchairs or students

utilizing adaptive equipment. Ensures safety of students in and outside of the building. Under the direction of the classroom teacher, supervises students in the absence of the teacher.

• Assists others in lifting, transferring, moving, positioning & securing students.
• Assists individuals & groups of students in community based activities; may be asked to driveBenefits Package
