Oberlin College is accepting applications for the postion of Staff Accountant. The Staff Accountant performs daily asset accounting activities for Oberlin College, ensures monthly accounting functions are completed as assigned and maintains accurate records and control reports. This is a full-time, Confidential Staff position, working a 12-month schedule. This position reports to the Asset Accounting Manager.

Responsibilities
  • Receive, record, and distribute all trustee statements for selected College Investments
  • Provide all accounting tasks for investment activity, including, but not limited to, purchases and sales of investments, realized gains and losses, return of capital, etc.
  • Prepare reconciliations of gifts clearing, gifts in transit, awaiting designation and administrative discretionary accounts
  • Test and reconcile investment fund manager statements, trustee custodian statements, and the General Ledger
  • Maintain unit balances by fund, reconcile unit activity, process spending distributions to individual source, and calculate the unit value of the endowment investment pool
  • Reconcile the gift clearing, gifts in transit, awaiting designation and administrative discretionary accounts monthly
  • Assist with accounting and reporting of gift, bequest and pledge balances
  • Prepare, maintain and reconcile various other investment records to the General Ledger, including but not limited to, Monthly GIP Earnings, GIP Fund Balance, etc.
  • Enter / maintain Endowment database (and others, if necessary) to Banner
  • Perform accounting and related account reconciliations as assigned
  • Perform accounting work (similar to Oberlin College) for Oberlin Shansi Memorial Association
  • Monitor control reports for errors, out of balance and complete or duplicate transactions
  • Provide assistance to the Controller’s Office as needed

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma
  • 5 years of recent working experience with general ledger accounting software (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
  • Thorough knowledge of accounting procedures, practices and resources
  • Ability to interpret and apply established administrative principles and practices to complex procedural technical problems
  • Proficiency in spreadsheet preparation, database maintenance and word processing (combine this with the last bullet point
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong working knowledge of computer applications including Microsoft Word and Excel

  • Strong working knowledge of Banner
  • Proficiency of personal computer software and the ability to interface with complex financial accounting systems

  • Ability to work as a team member and to collaborate with others to drive resolution
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret various accounting standards / publications, financial reports, and legal documents.

  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from students, college stakeholders, or regulatory agencies
