SUMMARY
The core of Relay's mission is to prepare teachers and school leaders to help all students develop the academic skills and strength of character needed to succeed in college and later life. This commitment extends to supporting and preparing diverse teachers. In 2019, two-thirds of our students identified as persons of color, making us one of the most diverse educator preparation programs in the country. Our internal research shows that our graduate students have an improved experience, lower levels of stress and are better equipped to succeed when working with a singular advisor. As such, a student advisor at Relay supports students from the point of enrollment to the point of program completion.
A Student Advisor advises students concerning their academic plans and progress, including but not limited to academic schedule, choice of program, term by term academic progress, certification, etc. to assist the student in making decisions concerning personal educational goals leading to program completion and certification.
Nature of Work
This position reports to the Directors of Student Affairs. This is a professional non-instructional advising position which requires considerable contact with students through individual and group meetings and sessions. Advisors are expected to possess extensive knowledge about academic programs, policies, procedures, and student support services within the scope of their responsibilities. They must be able to interpret students' needs and provide individualized service, as well as support students who may be experiencing challenges or require a higher level of support. This position may require up to 10% of travel.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The following outlines the most typical duties for this role.
Student Facing Responsibilities

  • Serve as advisor for a designated caseload (~100 -150) students through proactive outreach, support, and education. Develop a rapport of trust and accessibility with assigned students. Ensure accurate advice and quality support, contributing to persistence and a positive student experience.
  • Build rapport and relationships with students in their portfolios
  • Build rapport and relationships with faculty and staff.
  • Provide academic advising to facilitate students' successful and timely educational planning and program completion in alignment with their educational and career goals.
  • Facilitate goal setting, decision making, and problem solving with students
  • Meets with each student a minimum of 3x per term - beginning of term, after mid-term, prior to registration for next term/completion
  • Ensure that students are enrolled in the right courses and the right number of credits.
  • Expertly use student information systems to support and deliver advising services.
  • Monitor student progress and develop and certification plans in partnership with individual students. Provide information regarding curriculum, policies, procedures, opportunities, and guidelines for academic programs.
  • Monitors and communicates students' progress towards program completion and certification.
  • Monitors grades, attendance, certification, reports and dashboards to identify students who are at risk for not completing the program (e.g. attendance, grades, certification)
  • Monitors academic progress of students and may create and execute intervention plans to support students to satisfactory program completion as necessary e.g. guidance re returning to good academic standing.
  • Work to ensure students meet requirements for and certification within appropriate periods of time.
  • Maintain advising records and confidential student evaluation records.
  • Communicate with faculty to share and gather info.
  • Adopts the case management model to optimize interactions and provides academic advising and other services to support student retention and success.
  • Evaluate student needs and provide appropriate resource referral to institutional resources and opportunities.
  • Helps to solve general student concerns and refers specific challenges to appropriate person(s) e.g. access to Canvas, switching programs to match teaching placements, missing cert requirements, tuition and billing, etc.
  • Connect students with institutional and community resources.
  • Provides resources and referrals to respond to students' needs (e.g. socioemotional supports, certification supports, AmeriCorps info).
  • Support students through educational transition processes (ex. orientation, major/placement/certification changes, leave of absence (if necessary), and program completion.)
  • Advise students individually and/or with groups regarding academic requirements, appropriate course selection, enrollment options, academic policies and procedures, and campus resources.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Regularly communicates and coordinates with faculty, certification officers, registrar, support center and other internal teams (i.e prospective students teams, student financial services, etc.) to exchange pertinent information and plan for student success.
  • Evaluate student information and data to facilitate enrollment and registration. Maintain advising records. In partnership with students and the registrar's office, facilitate degree and certification audits and support students if the need for exceptions arise.
  • Use data to identify trends, and work with advisement team to create responses to those data to:
  • prevent probation and dismissal of students,
  • identify opportunities to offer skill/knowledge building opportunities to students,
  • advocate for change
  • identify opportunities for high-performing student engagement and goal attainment.
  • Understand and abide by the legal guidelines and regulatory requirements associated with their work (e.g Title IX, FERPA).
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and training to maintain up-to-date knowledge about advising concepts, practices, policies, technologies, and student success needs at the university and in higher education.
  • Serve on appropriate advisory committees, attend related meetings (including case management and tactical meetings with other teams) and work with the student advisement team to meet stated goals and outcomes.
  • Perform related duties as required or deemed necessary to meet the advising goals within the Student Advisor's scope of responsibility.

QUALIFICATIONS
First and foremost, the Student Advisor must share the Relay community's commitment to working together to improve student growth and achievement through phenomenal teacher preparation grounded in diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism.
This position requires a minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Education, Counseling or academic field directly related to the Advisor's specific responsibilities of at least 3 years of PK-12 education in the state of New York.
Preferred qualifications include having at least one year of experience in student support or related academic functions within higher education.

COMPENSATION
Relay is committed to creating and maintaining a compensation and benefits system that supports our ability to recruit and retain a diverse and talented team. As we make decisions about compensation, we will be guided by the following values: clarity, consistency, and internal equity. The salary range for this role is $74,250 to $111,375. New hires will be offered a salary at the starting point of the range and can expect their salary to be placed at the beginning of the range to allow for an equitable starting salary process and continual salary growth during an employee's time at Relay GSE.
To ensure internal pay equity:

  • New hires are not eligible for a salary at the high end of the role's salary range,
  • All staff salaries will be capped at the salary range maximum, and
  • Relay does not negotiate salary offers.
