TITLE: Guest (Substitute) Teacher
REPORTS TO: Building Principal/Director of assigned school
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: At Will; As-Needed/On-Call; Works according to need at location

SUMMARY:
Supervises students and delivers lesson plan during the absence of the regularly scheduled classroom teacher.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree preferred. Hold a valid Idaho Standard Teaching preferred. Previous experience with Blaine County School District preferred. Previous teaching experience or desire to interact with children preferred. High flexibility and availability preferred. Spanish language skills or bilingualism preferred but not required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (This list of essential duties is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.   • Upon accepting a substitute teaching assignment, arrives 30 minutes prior to the start of the instructional day, and leaves 30 minutes after the instructional day has ended.
  • Checks in with school office upon arrival at the school building for a substitute assignment.
  • Assumes all responsibilities of the absent teacher, including; student safety, attendance, student instruction, student learning, and appropriate records.
  • Follows lesson plans and instructional material provided by the regular classroom teacher as closely as possible. Enforces classroom rules.
  • Prepares lesson plans with assistance, as directed by the building principal, when lesson plans are not available in the classroom.
  • Assumes responsibility for overseeing pupil behavior in class and during lunch and recess periods.
  • Follows and uses the district-wide disciplinary method (Ed Ford Method).
  • Maintains appropriate records, including; checking test papers, recording grades, student assignments for homework, projects, etc.
  • Assists with supervision of students on the playground, in the lunchroom, and school buses (loading/unloading) as requested or assigned.
  • Leaves a brief note for the regular teacher on conclusion of each assignment/day, explaining the events for the day, concerns, disciplinary issues, etc.
  • Immediately reports any problems, concerns, or accidents to the building principal.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to work in a professional and friendly manner. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing, in one-on-one and small group situations to parents, students, and other employees of the District. Ability to read and interpret documents and instructions, furnished in a variety of formats, not limited to safety rules and regulations, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Knowledge of basic math skills including the addition, subtraction multiplication, and division of multiple units of measure. Ability to solve practical problems. Skill to use a personal computer. Ability to perform duties with an awareness of all District policy and procedures, Board of Education policies, and applicable laws.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The job is performed primarily indoors, though the employee may be required to perform duties outdoors in various types of weather, including inclement weather with temperatures at or below freezing for extended periods of time. The employee frequently interacts with students and staff. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to balance, stand, and walk; use mental acuity and repetitive motion; use hands to hold, move, feel and manipulate objects; reach with hands and arms; sit, stoop, kneel, or crouch. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Specific speaking and hearing abilities required by this job include expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, shouting in order to be heard, and receiving detailed information through oral communication. Performs light work exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
