Join our team and help us provide a fun, safe, engaging, and educational summer camp experience for youth ages 6-12! These full day summer camps will run from June 26 – September 1, 2023, outside of the regular school calendar. Sumer camp activities include sports, music, art, science, group socialization, community involvement, education, and field trips. The summer camp instructors (lead and support staff) will work with city-wide facilities, parks, and local community business to create a diverse, equitable and inclusive experience for City of Hillsboro youth.
2023 Summer Camp: 12 weeks of camp running June 26- September 1, 2023
This is a seasonal opportunity that will run from June 26 - September 1, 2023 and work approximately 40 hours per week.

Recreation Instructor IIParticipates in the instruction and organization of recreation programs; performs directly related work as required.
The principal function of an employee in this class is to participate in the instruction and organization of City recreational programs. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of an assigned supervisor, but some leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgement and initiative. This class is distinguished from the class of Recreation Instructor I by lead worker duties. Lead worker responsibilities are exercised over employees in the classes of Recreation Instructor I and Recreation Program Aide. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with the assigned supervisor, other City employees, program participants, and the general public. The principal duties of this class are performed at recreation facilities. This is a non-exempt position.
Recreation Instructor III
Plans, organizes, and coordinates structured recreational classes and activities for participants of all ages; performs directly related work as required.
The principal function of an employee in this class is to plan, organize, and coordinate the implementation of structured recreational classes and activities. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of an assigned supervisor, but some leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgement and initiative. This class performs lead worker duties over assigned subordinate recreation personnel. This class is distinguished from the class of Recreation Instructor II by additional responsibility involved in recreational program planning and coordination. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with the assigned supervisor, other City employees, program participants, and the general public. The principal duties of this class are performed in a recreational facility. This is a non-exempt position.

Examples of Essential Work
Responsible for planning, preparing, instructing and/or leading general and/or specialized summer camp activities for program participants.
Responsible for the development and implementation of assigned recreation programs. Incumbents in this job classification work independently, within established guidelines, to develop, coordinate, supervise, and instruct the day-to-day activities of assigned program areas and provide lead direction to assigned part-time staff and volunteers.

This role will take place indoors & outdoors at various City of Hillsboro facilities, parks and local field trip destinations.

Rec III

  • Instructs assigned recreational programs, including creating lesson plans, preparing materials and facilities, cleaning facilities after programs, and leading activities such as group time, art, music, games, and physical and socialization activities;
  • Develops ideas for recreation classes, including researching programs, formulating ideas, and creating\presenting proposal(s) to Recreation Coordinator;
  • Performs various clerical duties, including working with receptionist, helping customers, answering phones, communicating program information to parents, participants, and the general public, and processing registration forms;
  • Works with Recreation Coordinator, including supervising recreation aides, maintaining class records, and enforcing rules and regulations to ensure safety of participants;
  • Serves as a lead worker in an assigned work group, including instructing and directing the work of assigned subordinate recreation personnel;
  • Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees;
  • Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems;
  • Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas;
  • Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner;
  • Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities;
  • Performs other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the classification.

Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills, perceives, understands and manages interactions appropriately, is accountable for own actions, capitalizes on learning opportunities, and is open to performance feedback and coaching.

Acceptable Experience and Training

  • 2 years of experience in youth recreation or related field;
  • High School Diploma or GED; and
  • Some related work experience; or

Any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Bilingual preferred but not required
