PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Plans and supervises various operations within the various departments to manufacture steel components in accordance with company policies, manufacturing standards and methods, product requirements, quality standards and production schedules. Coordinates and oversees product flow through the factory to ensure efficiency and productivity in support of overall AST goals and objectives.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Directs the work of shipping, bending, beveling, machining, straightening and welding operators by assigning/re-assigning workstations and analyzing production methods to increase efficiency and assure accomplishment of established goals for quantity and quality.

  • Schedules and adjusts schedules to assure optimum utilization of employees' skills and equipment and to assure timely response to priority orders.
  • Provides technical assistance, troubleshoots, analyzes and resolves problems associated with machinery and tooling.
  • Monitors setups interprets work orders and approves machine programs.
  • Evaluates and orders tooling, fixtures and specialty items.
  • Maintains controls of compliance with specifications and quality standards of manufactured parts.
  • Trains and cross-trains operators in the technical skills of job assignments including machine operations, setup, quality and departmental procedures.
  • Provides costs data and cost estimates for use in preparation of departmental budgets.
  • Devises and implements improved production methods, reductions of setup times and efficiencies in handling of raw stock and work in progress.
  • Schedules general machining maintenance and orders departmental tools and equipment.
  • Drives forklift and operates overhead crane as needed to position and transport materials.
  • Conducts safety meetings and trains operators in safe handling of materials and safe operation of machines, tools and equipment. Enforces rules covering use of protective gear and housekeeping in work areas.
  • Responsible for control of materials used in the department including measurement of consumption, losses and scrap.
  • Coordinates with personnel from all departments in determining needs for parts. Adjusts manufacturing schedules to assure timely response to requirements and priorities.
  • Investigates accidents and reports on findings. Makes recommendations for preventative measures.
  • Lays out jobs to be done on various machines in cooperation with manufacturing engineer.
  • Administers plant rules and disciplinary policies.
  • Compiles data and prepares departmental recaps and reports on production, quality and related information.
  • Performs annual performance reviews of subordinates and recommends wage increases; formulates and monitors performance improvement plans.
  • Participates in selection of employees who have bid for jobs in the department.
  • Maintains good housekeeping standards in assigned area.
  • Performs all duties following established safety procedures and guidelines using assigned safety equipment.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Requirements:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:· Requires Associate Degree or the equivalent in work experience to attain required machine and tooling knowledge. · Three to five years experience manufacturing environment. · Prior supervisory training would be an asset and on-going supervisory training is necessary. · Six to nine months in the position is required to become proficient in most phases of the job.JOB KNOWLEDGE:· Must know and be able to apply the functions and duties of supervision, including the training and guidance of those supervised. · Must have a thorough understanding of AST policies and procedures and their administration. Must know and teach safe handling and storage of paints and related materials. · Must know shop mathematics and the characteristics of various metals and metal forms. · Must know and apply basic principles of industrial and manufacturing engineering. · Requires skill in the operation of electric overhead crane and must have a forklift license. · Must have good communication skills.COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES:

  • The greatest complexity of duties is that of troubleshooting machine and tool related problems and in the innovation of procedures, processes and techniques needed to improve productivity, improve quality of parts and reduce costs.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

  • Works under the general supervision of the production manager and within established guidelines, company policies and procedures.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR ACCURACY:

  • Maintains high volume production of parts manufactured to close tolerances, within engineering specifications and company quality standards.
  • Failure to meet these criteria could result in lost time, requirements for rework and scrap in addition to slowdowns or stoppages of subsequent operations and possible delays to shipment of product.
  • High degree of accuracy required in layout of work, setup and operation of precision metal forming and shaping machines.

CONTACT WITH OTHERS:

  • Has contact with coworkers and other managers and supervisors in matters related to meeting special needs or responding to priority requirements.
  • Tact, courtesy, and professional decorum are required to maintain positive working relationships.

CONFIDENTIAL DATA:· Has access to personnel records of assigned employees which are handled on a confidential basis. · Has knowledge of proprietary methods/processes and production costs, disclosure of which could damage competitive posture of the company.MENTAL/VISUAL/PHYSICAL EFFORT:· Physical efforts require walking, climbing, bending, stooping, and reaching. · Required to speak and hear. · Mental demands include sustained attention to detail, ability to visualize three dimensional forms and do problem identification and resolution. · Must have good eye/hand/foot coordination, manual dexterity and visual acuity.ENVIRONMENT:· Works in metal cutting, machining and welding environments. · Protective gear is required; caution and adherence to manufacturing safety rules must be observed.EXTENT OF SUPERVISION:

  • Plans, directs and coordinates work of all employees within assigned departments.
  • Makes work assignments, trains employees, makes formal appraisals of performance and enforces discipline and plant rules.
  • Makes decisions on basis of safety, quality, costs, efficient uses of machinery, control of scrap, budget constraints and schedules for production.

SCOPE OF SUPERVISION:

  • Supervises 22 - 50 second shift employees involved in cutting, machining and welding operations.
