The Support Service Worker II, Bilingual (Spanish and English) and Monolingual positions within this job posting will perform a wide variety of duties in support of services programs within Health and Human Services. There are positions within Public Health and Behavioral Health and Recovery Services.
Public Health positions are within the following divisions:
The Detention Unit - One (1) full-time regular position, bilingual highly desirable (This role is 100% in person/on site). The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Division of Public Health, has a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Marin County Sheriff's Department to oversee clinical services provided to patients in the jail and juvenile detention facilities.
The Detention Support Service Worker II supports a dedicated team of nurses providing medical care to patients in the County of Marin's jail and juvenile detention facility.
Working under the direction of the Nursing Services Manager for Marin’s Detention Medical Program, within the County Jail, the Detention Support Service Worker II (DSSW) has the overall responsibility to provide essential clinical and administrative support functions. The DSSW assists medical staff during clinics and inmate sick calls, and in coordination with clinical staff, monitors infectious disease testing, treatment, compliance, specimen collections, and lab test results. The DSSW takes patient medical histories, prepares patients for physical examinations, coordinates scheduling inmate care with outside providers, arranges inmate transportation, and coordinates medical records requests. The DSSW tracks inventory needs and orders/stocks supplies and provides administrative support functions such as assisting the coordination of clinical staffing schedules, coordinating the release and processing of medical records requests, etc.
The ideal candidate is comfortable interacting with inmates and discussing topics that are personal and may involve sensitive and confidential information. The ideal candidate also has experience working in a clinical environment and can work in a stressful and sometimes chaotic environment. Additionally, the candidate has experience assisting medical staff during clinics, taking medical histories and setting up rooms as needed, etc. Experience working in a high security or correctional health setting, a medical certification, and Spanish language skills are all highly desirable but not required.
The Communicable Disease and Community Preparedness (CDCP) Unit – one (1) part-time 0.85 FTE, regular position, bilingual (this position allows for a hybrid work schedule*). This position provides support to the Communicable Disease and Community Preparedness (CDCP) Unit which includes the following programmatic areas: Acute CD (including COVID), Immunizations, Tuberculosis (TB), Public Health Preparedness, Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) and Rabies Control). The primary responsibilities for this position include processing incoming reports of disease, assisting in case and contact investigations, data entry into various platforms including the State’s CalREDIE database for communicable diseases, and into the statewide immunization registry. The position will also be responsible for providing Direct Observed Therapy (DOT) for clients receiving medication for TB. This position will also participate in community outreach and education, including screening and data collection at vaccination clinics.
Behavioral Health and Recovery Services positions:
The Access Team has one (1) full-time, regular vacancy and the program serves as the entry point into the Behavioral Health System of Care and responds to a high volume of calls and service requests daily, often from individuals in acute distress. The Access Team provides in-person, field-based, and telehealth behavioral health assessments. This position requires the person to be in the office and in the community. Based on business needs, the role may have the ability to work a hybrid schedule.
The Mobile Crisis Continuum has two (2) full-time, regular fixed-term positions through June 30, 2025, and the program include two separate teams: The Mobile Crisis Response Team and the Transition and Outreach Team. Both teams are field/community-based and responsive to individuals presenting with mental health or substance use crises across Marin County, with a particular focus on children and transition-age youth, though there will be opportunities to also work with adults. The roles are an integral part of the Crisis Continuum of Care, which encompasses a short-term case management team, outreach and engagement services, mobile crisis response and support, the Crisis Stabilization Unit, and The Crisis Residential Facility. This role is 100% in the office and in the community.
The Support Service Worker II, bilingual positions within Behavioral Health and Recovery Services have a variety of duties including but not limited to:
Acts as an initial triage point for county services and will be responsible for safety assessments and linkage to appropriate services based on the clients’ needs.- Provides excellent mental health services that honor the diverse background of clients served.
- This role will include a significant amount of administrative duties which require excellent documentation skills that comply with Medi-Cal and BHRS standards and timelines.
- Collaboration with a multidisciplinary team to assist with targeted interventions.
- Engages in the development of individual service plans for clients.
- Timely documentation of services and ability to maintain BHRS direct service productivity standards.
- Coordinates with community partners regarding accessing services.
- Coordinates medical, psychiatric, and vocational/educational services.
- Establishes benefits to which clients are entitled or may benefit from.
- Assists with housing searches, completing the necessary paperwork, establishing in-home support services, and collaborating with public guardians.
- Provides or secures transportation to appointments and utilizes established safety protocols.
- This team serves Marin County Medi-Cal beneficiaries, low-income and uninsured children, youth, adults, and older adults. The Access Team
- Provides referrals and authorizations for Specialty Mental Health Services that may be provided by county programs and/or a network of organizational and individual providers.
- Provides referrals to outpatient substance use services and authorizations for residential substance use treatment.
- Makes principal contact with pre-consumers (Marin County has a large population of monolingual Spanish-speaking clients).
- Conducts demographic screenings for mental health and substance use services via telephone in English and Spanish.
- Verifies eligibility and processes documents important to service delivery.
- Provides critical support to Mental Health Practitioners and the Unit Supervisor.
- Receives phone calls regarding acute mental health crisis situations
- Coordinates appropriate responses based on the acuity of the presenting crisis
- Provides appropriate referrals and services to callers
- Officer of the Day duties for both MCRT and TOT
- Communicates expected response times and coordinating between callers and the Mobile Crisis field response teams
- Other duties as assigned
The positions within Mobile are are fixed term, are initially funded up to June 30, 2025. Please note, that the positions may end prior to June 30, 2025, if funding ceases or the work is complete. In addition, this position may continue after June 30, 2025, if funding is renewed or extended. Per PMR 48.2, fixed-term employees are not subject to Reduction in Force rights at the completion of the term.
- Health and Human Services have embraced a hybrid work schedule that considers that some duties of this position may be performed remotely. An option to telework up to three days per week and work the remaining days onsite in San Rafael, CA is available; however, the successful candidate must be able to report to County facilities for meetings, work assignments, and/or disaster service work upon short notice, as needed and deemed appropriate. While onboarding and training, the successful candidate may be required to work primarily onsite before establishing a hybrid work schedule.
Bilingual Testing/Certification: Please note if the successful candidate has bilingual skills, they must demonstrate proficiency in both Spanish and English prior to receiving differential pay. A bilingual proficiency exam will be administered at that time to ensure the candidate possesses the appropriate skill level to meet the requirements.
Our Highly Qualified Candidate:
The ideal candidate has experience completing administrative and support tasks using Windows and Microsoft Office programs in a mental health, primary health care, detention, public health or social services settings and has familiarity with the complex needs clients may face. They successfully utilize computer software programs including Word, Excel, Outlook and can learn department specific computer programs with ease. They have the ability to identify and triage urgent client needs both in-person and by telephone. The candidate has experience processing forms, document recording, intake applications and other types of administrative paperwork. The successful candidate is detail-oriented and performs important technical and complicated tasks with a high degree of accuracy and reliability.
The ideal candidate also has a proven track record of providing excellent customer service and developing and maintaining professional, supportive, respectful and collaborative working relationships. They possess excellent interpersonal skills and have experience interfacing with staff at all levels, as well as members of the public. Excellent time management skills, ability to prioritize tasks effectively and maintain adherence to multiple deadlines is essential. The ideal candidate can express ideas clearly, concisely and accurately when writing correspondence. The candidate also has experience successfully working independently and as part of a team.

Three years of experience in a health, social service or community organization that demonstrates possession of the stated knowledge and abilities plus successful completion of twelve (12) semester units of education in health science, behavioral science and/or social welfare from a recognized college or equivalent. One additional year of experience may substitute for the educational requirement. College-level education in a field as listed above may be substituted for the experience on a year-for-year basis to a maximum of two years.
If assigned as a medical assistant in a clinic or public health setting, one year of experience must have included medical assistant duties under the direction of a licensed physician at a level equivalent to the County's class of Support Services Worker I. California licensure as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) may substitute for the medical assistant experience.
