The ideal candidate for this role will have a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in the oil and gas industry with a foundation in the state and local tax area. This role has a primary responsibility for indirect tax compliance and tax research, manages state audits and responds to audit requests, provides a technical knowledge in development of the Company’s tax systems, and leads process improvements and tax recovery efforts. The individual in this position understands cross functional impact of processes and has a working knowledge of accounting and tax principles and procedures. Significant experience with Texas indirect tax law is a must.

Essential Roles & Responsibilities:

Perform a review of monthly state and local tax returns, workpapers and other filings
Conduct technical tax research and draft technical memorandums to support tax positions
Identify and document issues and work with management to make appropriate recommendations for corrective actions
Function as a main contact to state auditors and internal stakeholders for audit – related matters
Respond to audit requests and coordinate audit activities
Provide technical knowledge in the design, development and support of Company’s tax engine and tax processes
Lead sales tax process improvement initiatives
Provide support and guidance to business partners on indirect tax matters
Assist in efforts to minimize tax liabilities by staying current on law changes and by analyzing existing methods for calculating taxes
Supervise, train, and develop staff
Other duties as assigned, including special projects related to indirect tax
Job Requirements:
Solid knowledge of Texas sales and use tax for Upstream Oil and Gas Companies and related reporting to tax authorities
Experience with state audits
Strong tax research and analysis skills
High level analytical and reasoning skills
Experience with development of tax processes including design, testing, data sourcing and data configuration
Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
High attention to detail and accuracy
Strong organizational, time management, and prioritization skills
Eager to develop a thorough understanding of the Company’s business, methodologies, and tools
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in tax, accounting, finance, or related field of study
Master’s degree in tax, accounting, finance, and related field of study a plus

Typical Experience:

Minimum of 7 years of relevant work experience
Oil and gas accounting experience
CPA a plus
APA, CIA, CFE or other relevant professional credentials and certifications a
plus
Previous public accounting experience is a plus**

Schedule: Primary remote with the ability to come to our Denver office on short notice

Salary* Range:* $84,000-$134,000 (based on experience) plus annual discretionary bonus, medical, dental, vision, 401k, PTO, etc.
