SUMMARY

This is an exciting and unique opportunity for a dynamic teacher to provide meaningful and engaging instruction to high school students in a self-contained, one-room high school. This position welcomes teachers who have knowledge of trauma-informed educational practices and instruction that is designed to make a significant impact in benefitting the lives of youth who have experienced homelessness or have been at risk of being homeless. John Muir Charter Schools (JMCS) is looking for a highly qualified teacher who has the ability to establish positive and supportive relationships with youth while also challenging them to push the boundaries of their own limitations and strive to achieve academic and professional success. The JMCS teacher is responsible for classroom instruction of young adults participating in the Los Angeles LGBT Center programs and in delivering multiple high school subjects curricula. LA LGBT and JMCS’s innovative education programs are designed to provide youth ages 16-25 with an engaging educational experience that meets individual student needs. JMCS combines direct instruction, project work, credit recovery, life skills, work readiness training and other academic experiences into a highly personalized high school classroom. This school works in partnership with youth to co-design their academic experience.

The Youth Center offers services in an LGBTQ+ safe and affirming environment and serves as an entry point to assist youth making the transition from homelessness to housing. John Muir Charter School is housed under the auspices of The Youth Center where they provide a number of services including meals, clothing, support groups, a GED and college prep program, an employment preparation, training and placement program, case management, counseling, a crisis shelter and a transitional living program (TLP). The community-based programs include services for youth at-home, in school or in systems of care.

The classroom is a self-contained class; the instructor facilitates all academic content. Students generally are in the academic classroom 15-30 hours per week while receiving additional job skills, vocational training, and wrap-around services through the LA LGBT center programs. JMCS provides curriculum and support, and the instructor is held responsible for creating a dynamic, engaging, rigorous, and supportive experience for our students. This full-time position will be supported by LA LGBT staff who will provide career development training, social services, and other activities through the LA LGBT Center. JMCS staff on site work collaboratively with the LA LGBT Center staff to support the success of the students.

The position is 1.0 FTE, 5 days per week. This site is on a Semester calendar with holidays and breaks; July is a non-instructional month, although summer school is optional. This position is expected to be an active and cooperative member of the LA LGBT Center and JMCS communities.
