Technology Development Associate (Entry Level or Experienced) (Life Sciences)

Van Andel Institute (VAI) is an independent nonprofit biomedical research and science education organization located in the heart of downtown Grand Rapids, MI, on the vibrant Medical Mile. In our proud 22-year existence, we have grown into a world-class research and educational institution that supports the work of more than 450 scientists, educators and staff.

That is where you come in. As a valued member of the Business Development and Technology Transfer (BDTT) team, you will develop relationships and create opportunities to support VAI researchers. Your skills in life sciences will identify and solve challenges facing our investigators as they build partnerships with researchers and clinicians around the globe to create breakthroughs in diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

The position is open to individuals already in Technology Transfer or those looking to begin an exciting career in Business Development and Technology Transfer. Your career trajectory may find you working in private research institutions, universities, biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies or in a law firm.

What will you do on a daily basis?

Provide operational support to the Business Development and Technology Transfer team by:

  • Identifying the requirement for an agreement regarding Material Transfers, Research Collaborations, Confidentiality etc.
  • Selecting the appropriate agreement by using your scientific skills to understand the project and its content.
  • Drafting, negotiating, recording and monitoring agreements.
  • Providing input on operational improvements for the team.
  • Informing investigators on the best practices to establish lasting and productive collaborations.
  • Over time, we expect the candidate will develop and lead their own projects.

What will qualify you for this role?

  • A life science Bachelor’s degree. Master’s or PhD preferred
  • Actual hand-on experience at the laboratory bench is a bonus.
  • Exposure to, or experience in biotechnology, technology transfer or business development activities is a strong advantage.

You should also be a person with the following traits and characteristics:

  • Highly motivated individual, strong performer and dedicated.
  • Effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Problem solving and resolution, research acumen and analytical skills.
  • Detail oriented and customer service oriented.
  • Demonstrated ability to deal effectively and confidentially with difficult situations and with individuals at all organizational levels.
