The Project Manager is a core resource at the center of our innovative and impactful technology program at the Memory and Aging Center that is critical to bringing next generation research tools to researchers in the space of degenerative brain diseases and the biology of healthy aging. This position is a rare opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to neurology clinical research via a health technology position in a diverse environment. The Project Manager’s role is to manage the implementation of small to medium technology projects as well as support ongoing MAC Core Research Technology operations. Most project resources will be from MAC Core Technology team and some will be through partnership with other UCSF entities, and / or via 3rd party vendors/contractors, thus communications skills and a strong ability to work across organizational boundaries is crucial. The Project Manager manages the scope, timing and delivery of small to medium scale projects to support the MAC’s organizational goals and benefits to MAC researchers and stakeholders. The Project Manager provides key support throughout the project lifecycle, adding, tasks, tracking tasks and milestones, running scrums, creating and managing sprints.

The ideal candidate will have a background in information management and draw upon exemplary project management, critical thinking, problem solving skills, and a passion for creating reliable and maintainable technical systems. In addition, the candidate will remain flexible bringing to bear appropriate strategies to the realities of developing technology in an academic research environment. Having an easy going attitude with a clear communication style is a must.

Candidates from across the continental US will be considered and this position will be remote.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The Memory and Aging Center is an internationally renowned clinical research center with a diverse workforce of over 260 full time employees with offices and clinical research space located in the Sandler Neurosciences Building and multiple other buildings on the UCSF Mission Bay Campus. The MAC provides clinical care for patients suffering from neurodegenerative disease processes; from this clinical population, external referrals, and direct recruitment efforts we enroll patients into more than 50 structured research protocols and/or treatment trials. We are a California Alzheimer’s Research Center and a federal Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center.

The Memory and Aging Center (MAC) is the largest division within the Department of Neurology. The Department of Neurology is a teaching, research and clinical care unit within the School of Medicine (SOM). The Department of Neurology is a large, multi-site department, with locations including Mission Bay, Parnassus, Mt. Zion, ZSFG, VAMC and the Gladstone Institutes and is affiliated with the UCSF Weill Institute for Neurosciences. The department is constructed of 14 administrative divisions with 11 clinical specialties. The department has over 230 faculty and academic employees, 290 staff positions, and 170 trainees including: residents, clinical fellows and postdoctoral scholars.

The Department has an annual operating budget in excess of $120M and has been the #1 recipient of NIH funding across all U.S. Departments of Neurology for the past 6 consecutive years, in addition to being the #1 recipient of philanthropic dollars across all departments at UCSF.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Education, Business Administration, Engineering, or related discipline with an information technology project management focus and 3+ years’ experience or equivalent combination of experience/education.
  • Thorough knowledge of business and process analysis functions.
  • Thorough Knowledge of related areas of IT.
  • Strong skills and knowledge of methodologies associated with analysis of processes and problems, information flow and architecture.
  • In-depth understanding and skill in process and systems requirement documentation standards, such as Use Case modeling, User Story creations and narrative description.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with others from diverse backgrounds.
  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines. Demonstrates problem solving skills.
  • Broad knowledge relating to software design.
  • Thorough knowledge of business processes and procedures.
  • Demonstrated testing and test planning skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a strong aility to work across organizational boundaries. Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization. Interpersonal and communications skills to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization. Effective writing and verbal skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate UCSF PRIDE values; work collegially with diverse individuals and groups in a demanding, fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification in project management methodology (e.g. Project Management Professional - PMP or Prince2 certified).
  • Certification in Agile / Scrum roles (e.g. Certified Scrum Master - CSM).
  • Four+ years of work experience of progressive broad-based information systems business analysis and project management, with strong project management methodology background, preferably at a large academic institution or company.
  • Requires basic knowledge of project management principles, theories, and concepts.
  • Experience with, and understanding of enterprise healthcare products and / or use of research data systems in an academic/research healthcare environment.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail. Demonstrated ability to determine relevance and prioritize tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with technical resources.
  • Demonstrated Knowledge of Agile project management principles, theories, and concepts.
  • Experience with leveraging Lean UX principles to define project requirements.

License/Certification

  • Certification in project management methodology (e.g. Project Management Professional - PMP or Prince2 certified).
  • Certification in Agile / Scrum roles (e.g. Certified Scrum Master - CSM).
