SCOPE OF POSITION:
As a member of the Safety/Security Team, the Communication Specialist performs various communication, monitoring and reception duties involving the operation of the hospital Communication Center. Supervised by Security Supervisor. Interactions may include children, adolescents, adults and older adults.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Process interior/exterior telephone calls received throughout hospital switchboard.
- Process radio and page calls for required communications.
- Responsible for alerting proper authorities and/or departments in the event of a medical, security and/or environmental emergency.
- Monitor closed circuit television system (CCTV), facility/fire/security alarms.
- Exceed customer service expectations while greeting staff, visitors, responding to inquiries, directing those accordingly, processing keys, batteries, and after-hours deposits.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION
- High School diploma or equivalent.
EXPERIENCE
- At least 6 months’ work experience is required in a communication, dispatching or customer service center.
- Experience in a clinical setting preferred.
COMPETENCIES
- Good communication and strong customer service skills.
- Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing effectively.
- Ability to effectively deal with highly stressful/emotional situations (e.g. complaints, emergencies, etc.).
- Ability to interact with internal and external customers with tact and confidentiality.
- Understanding and working knowledge of computers, pagers, and dispatch functions.
- Ability to communicate professionally (verbal and written).
- Good trouble-shooting skills.
- Must have basic computer skills and ability to access internet and other programs applicable to Waterbury Hospital procedures.
- Rotating schedule as needed.
