Job Description Summary
  • The Children’s Learning Center at Shawnee State University invites applications for a Temporary, part-time Classroom Assistant Teacher. The Children’s Learning Center (CLC) is a preschool and lab school for the Department of Teacher Education. The school serves children who are 6 weeks through 5 years of age. The CLC’s curriculum is based on state and national standards, including the Ohio Early Learning and Development Standards. Assistant Teachers are responsible for providing support for the Lead Teacher in the daily routines and activities with an enriching and productive educational environment.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
FUNCTIONS
  • Assist teacher in offering a variety of learning experiences and environments to children.
  • Assist Lead Teacher in involving parents in children’s education.
  • Support Lead Teacher with Staff Collaboration.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assist teacher in offering a variety of learning experiences and environments to children
    • Supports an appropriate classroom environment for the children and develops and implements the CLC’s curriculum. Uses developmentally appropriate practices when engaging the children in learning experiences.
    • Assist teacher with lesson preparation by getting materials ready and setting up equipment.
    • Lead small group lessons and/or activities.
    • Assist the Lead Teacher with assessments of the developmental progress of each child across all developmental areas, using a variety of instruments and multiple data sources that address the program’s curriculum areas. Uses assessment information to design goals for individual children as well as to help guide curriculum planning and monitor progress. Maintains classroom portfolio, attendance, schedules and child files.
    • Uses technology as an instructional tool to extend learning within the classroom, integrate and enrich the curriculum, as a mechanism to share information between staff and families, and as a professional resource with colleagues and for one’s own professional development.
    • Provides a safe, clean and stimulating environment in which children and their families are provided with care that is warm, responsive, attentive, supportive and culturally sensitive according to individual needs.
  • Assist Lead Teacher in involving parents in children’s education
    • Maintains on-going communication between staff and families using a variety of means, including the online communication system, periodic parent-teacher conferences, informal meetings and family engagement events to promote dialogue and inform families of children’s learning activities and developmental milestones.
  • Support Lead Teacher with Staff Collaboration
    • Collaborates with colleagues, represents classroom at staff meetings to share ideas, experiences and concerns.
    • Attends and participates in on-going professional development.
    • Complies with the National Association for the Education of Young Children Code of Ethical Conduct, licensure rules and regulations as set forth by the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services, and guidelines of the federal CACFP program.
    • Displays an on-going desire to learn. Attends and participates in on-going professional development. Attends family events and center functions.

Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS ( EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE )
  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Two to three years’ experience
  • CPR, First Aid, Child Abuse, Communicable Disease

MINIMUM JOB KNOWLEDGE , SKILLS , AND ABILITIES
  • Communication skills: must be able to talk with parents and colleagues about the progress of the children in their care; ability to provide information effectively and exercise good listening skills to understand parents’ instructions
  • Decision-making skills: exercise good judgment in order to respond to emergencies or difficult situations
  • Instructional skills: ability to explain things in terms young children can understand
  • Interpersonal skills: ability to work well with people to develop good relationships with parents, children, and colleagues
  • Patience: ability to respond to overwhelming and difficult situations calmly

Preferred Qualifications Summary
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Two (2) to three (3) years of related work experience in an early childhood setting

Working Conditions Summary
Normal classroom environment with little exposure to excessive dust, noise, heat and the like.
