We are seeking extraordinary Nursing Tech - Spinal Cord Unit to join our team at UM Rehab & Ortho Institute. In total, we welcome over 3,000 patients every year and offer more than 130 beds on specialized units dedicated to stroke, traumatic brain and spinal cord injury, limb loss, and comprehensive medical rehabilitation.

General Summary

Under direct supervision of the RN or Nurse Tech/CNA, performs routine and delegated unit-based activities to assist in providing continuity of a client oriented unit with emphasis on quality service, patient/family satisfaction, continued improvement and high performance. Fulfillment of job duties requires the employee to have access to medication storage areas and to transport medications to/ from medication storage and delivery areas.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. These are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

  • Delivers specimens to appropriate labs.
  • Obtains medications from pharmacy when needed.
  • Obtains supplies from materials management.
  • Communicates with appropriate departments for needed equipment.
  • Maintains physical appearance of unit according to regulations.
  • Stocks patient rooms and isolation carts with appropriate supplies according to PAR levels.
  • Strips patient rooms after discharge/transfer. Prepares patient rooms for new admission.
  • Maintains order and cleanliness of utility and nutrition rooms.
  • Maintains order and cleanliness of occupied patient room
  • Assist with transport of stable patient
  • Assist with turning of patients
  • Spend time with stable patients who are alert, with guidance from RN.
  • Delivery of meal trays from dietary services to patient using patient name and date of birth as identifiers.

What You Need to Be Successful:


Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) is required.
  • Six months of experience in a position requiring public contact is highly desirable.
  • Assumes responsibility for annual training and knowledge base related to role.
