POSITION SUMMARY
The incumbent in this position is responsible for pinpointing the paths of cables, pipes and other conduits that carry utilities underground. This position reports to the Utility Locate Manager.

Contacts are typically with co-workers, contractors, County departments and the general public.

Work is performed outdoors, occasionally in inclement weather. The incumbent is exposed to noise, dirt, grease, dust, and machinery. Performing duties of this job requires standing, walking, sitting, stooping, working in close proximity to vehicular traffic, availability for emergency locates after normal business hours, and requires the ability to exert or lift 50 pounds or more. Must have the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of colors, and to perform frequent strenuous physical labor.

Completion of high school or equivalent is required. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued for the class of vehicle operated is required.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
Locate county affiliated underground utilities.

Clears brush and digs up utility lines.

Operates line location instruments and leak detection instruments.

Sets utility markings and points for county affiliated underground utilities.

Operates electronic surveying and data collection instruments.

Assists with researching drawings for line locations.

Assists with preparing sketches for field notes in construction layouts.

Must be available for emergency locates after normal business hours.

Performs other related duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of highway traffic control standards.

Knowledge of county operating policies and procedures as well as county ordinances and codes.

Skill in written and oral communication.

Ability to operate equipment such as a computer, electronic locating equipment, handheld GPS units, and other equipment related to the job.

Ability to read maps and other informational documents.

Ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.

Ability to acquire certifications relevant to job level.

Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees.

Ability to use independent judgment in routine and non-routine situations.

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent is required. Two years minimum experience required to perform the basic tasks of the position. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued for the class of vehicle operated is required.
