The Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs directs and coordinates activities of departments within Academic Affairs, while assisting the Provost in formulating and administering organizational policies related to faculty recruitment, hiring, orientation, development, recognition, and promotion. Generally, the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs:

  • Manages direct reporting lines as appropriate, including the reporting lines for the Director of Academic Personnel Services, Director of Faculty Activity Reporting, the Campus Office of Undergraduate Research Initiatives, the Center for Community Engagement, and the Center for Faculty Leadership and Development.
  • Leads efforts in Academic Affairs to promote the University's inclusive excellence framework in collaboration with deans, chairs, and other campus leaders.
  • Recommends policy changes related to faculty affairs, including changes in the institutional Handbook of Operating Procedures.
  • Oversees processes associated with faculty recruitment, appointment, orientation, evaluation, promotion, tenure, retention, and leave.
  • Provides guidance for college and departmental workload policies and faculty annual performance evaluation.
  • Designs, develops, and implements programs related to faculty success, in consultation with the Provost.
  • Implements programs to recognize and honor excellence among the faculty.
  • Liaises with Human Resources, Budget, Facilities Services, and other offices across campus to support faculty success.
  • Assists with grant writing and grants management as appropriate.
  • Liaises with, and provides professional development for, department chairs and program directors.
  • Hears student grievances on behalf of the Provost and recommends appropriate resolution.
  • Represents the Provost as needed and appropriate.
  • Collaborates with leaders in the Provost's Office, the Faculty Senate, and across the University in formulating and establishing policies, operating procedures, and goals.
  • Maintains a national perspective to stay abreast of developments in higher education.
  • Assists with the day-to-day management of operations for designated area(s).
  • Complies with all State and University policies.
  • Completes other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:


Applicants must hold a terminal degree in an academic discipline. Additionally, applicants shall be tenured full professors, possess experience in higher education administration, have a collaborative mindset and skillset, and possess strong communication skills. Finally, UTEP seeks applicants who possess an appreciation for the bilingual, multicultural nature of a border community.
