The City of Vacaville is accepting applications for the position of
Water Plant Operator I/ II in our Utilities Department. Currently, one (1) Water Plant Operator II vacancy exists. This recruitment will also establish an eligibility list for future Water Plant Operator I/II vacancies in this classification that may occur over the next 12-month period.

Salary Range:
Water Plant Operator I - $64,442.24 - $78,330.31/annually
Water Plant Operator II - $80,549.86 - $97,908.25/annually
*2.0% COLA and 1.0% equity wage increase scheduled for November 1, 2023*

Water Plant Operators operate a water treatment plant and related facilities in a safe, effective manner and in accordance with state requirements. Job duties include performing maintenance work and other related duties as assigned. Water Plant Operator II is the journey-level classification and requires possession of a T2 Water Treatment Plant Operator Certificate.

Water Plant Operator I/II typical assignments may consist of, but not be limited to, the following:
  • Monitors, operates, and adjusts controls at a water treatment plant, pumping stations, wells, and reservoir facilities
  • Manages information taken from computers, gauges, dials, and other instruments
  • Monitors, interprets, and adjusts computerized Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) controls
  • Controls the application of hazardous materials and chemicals such as chlorine and fluoride

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to acquire the knowledge and abilities would be:

WATER PLANT OPERATOR I

Education: Equivalent to completion of twelfth grade.

Experience: One year of work experience involving operation, repair, or maintenance of motors, pumps or similar equipment is highly desirable.

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a T1 Water Treatment Plant Operator Certificate issued by the State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) is highly desirable.

As a condition of passing probation, incumbents must obtain a T2 Water Treatment Plant Operator Certificate, plus any other state-mandated certificates. Must maintain valid certification as a condition of continued employment.

Possession of a valid California Class C Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record are conditions of initial and continued employment.


WATER PLANT OPERATOR II

Education: Equivalent to completion of twelfth grade.

Experience: One (1) year of work experience performing the functions of a water treatment plant operator.

License or Certificate: Possession of a current T2 Water Treatment Plant Operator Certificate issued by the California State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB), plus any other state-mandated certificates, is required. Must maintain valid certification as a condition of continued employment. Within 36 months of appointment, must obtain a T3 Water Treatment Plant Operator Certificate.

Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record are conditions of initial and continued employment. Within 12 months of appointment, must obtain licensing adequate to maintain compliance with all state and federal requirements for hazardous materials handling and transport. Current licensing requirements are: California Class C Commercial License with hazardous materials endorsement. Department of Motor Vehicles age restrictions may apply. This is a safety-sensitive position and will be subject to Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements for drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, reasonable suspicion and random testing).

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Appropriate certification and licensing are conditions of continued employment.

Water Plant Operator II must be willing and able to work any day and shift within a 24-hour period.

Employees are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriate for job assignments. Must comply with respiratory program and Cal OSHA standards.
