Scope of Position:

The Welcome Desk Associate is responsible for providing exceptional customer service experiences to guests and members. Responsibilities include selling and/or verifying memberships through POS system, providing information about the Salem Kroc Center, answering questions about programs and camps, and providing information for other related inquiries.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

Professional: The ability to work in a distinctively Christian environment. The ability to interact with co-workers and the public in a positive, professional manner in conformity with The Salvation Army Mission Statement. The ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds and circumstances. Demonstrate the ability to relate positively and energetically with staff, clients, members, and customers. Must have the ability to maintain a non-judgmental attitude in working with customers, clients, members, and staff.

Skills & Abilities: Must have command of the English language and possess excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to work independently and with minimal supervision. Must have the ability to work in a fast-paced and team-oriented environment while maintaining poise under pressure. Demonstrate the ability to empathize and communicate with low-income and vulnerable people. Possess excellent telephone skills and have proficient typing abilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Handle merchandise and concession sales.
  • Promote/sell programs and special events, making insightful recommendations that reflect the needs/interests of members.
  • Receive and handle incoming telephone calls, visitors, and emails in a friendly and businesslike manner; direct calls/inquiries to appropriate program/staff in a timely manner.
  • Maintain progressive knowledge of all programs, facilities, and special events.
  • Observe and identify customers, clients and members that may be recommended candidates for scholarship. Provide assistance for scholarship application process.
  • Be responsible for maintaining the orderliness and cleanliness of the Point of Sale (POS) stations and kiosks. Keep sales area clean and neatly arranged at all times.
  • Secure the POS area at the open and close of shift.
  • Assist in maintaining cleanliness and neat appearance of public areas.
  • Provide administrative support to include filing, data entry and mailing.
  • Take ownership of member/facility issues by notifying the appropriate department, staff, manager to resolve issue, or by handling simple issues personally.
  • Adhere to Kroc Center operations as well as all policy procedures as adopted by Administration.
  • Observe all safety rules and regulations.
  • Attend staff meetings as assigned.
  • Provide referral information to meet individual and family needs.
  • Perform other related job duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be well groomed and adhere to the required dress code.
  • Must be able to perform tasks of a repetitive nature without diminishing performance.
  • Must be able to walk, bend, stoop, squat, twist body, stand for short/long periods of time, kneel, push, pull, have sense of touch, reach, grasp with hands and fingers, lifting and carrying up to 40 pounds unassisted, climb stairs, close vision, distance vision, talk, hear, have-eye hand coordination, have manual dexterity, speak and read, and working in noisy areas, as these movements are a regular requirement of this position.
  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time in front of a computer screen.

Working Conditions:

This position may have frequent phone and in person contact with people from diverse backgrounds who may be angry, hostile, confused or frustrated. This position will work with minimum supervision and that work involves a high volume of customers coming in and out.

Education and Work Experience:

  • Education – High school diploma or GED equivalency
  • Work/Professional Experience – Previous cashier and/or customer service experience helpful. Computer software application experiences a plus.
