Michigan Sugar Company has an immediate full-time opportunity for a Welder, located at the Bay City Factory.
Job Summary:
The Welder is responsible for supporting the factory operation during sugar beet harvesting season; August through March/April and maintenance welding projects during inter-campaign. This is an 8-hour shift welding position. This position may require working overtime hours past shift occasionally as well as working weekends and holidays. Some heavy lifting, ability to work in heights, holes and various weather conditions may be required.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Perform welding repairs to support plant uptime as needed.
  • Complete Work orders and weld projects in a timely fashion.
  • May be asked to cover different positions or shifts if necessary or other duties at any time.
Position Qualifications:
  • Must pass Michigan Sugar weld test.
  • Required to become certified in SMAW on 5” pipe in 2g & 5g position every two years.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must demonstrate ability to verify dimensions, draw and fabricate from blueprints and schematics.
  • Knowledge of welding processes such as SMAW and GMAW.
  • Knowledge of welding safety and confined space procedures.
  • Previous physical labor experience is required.
  • Ability to follow instructions given and complete tasks working alone or together with other employees.
Key Competencies:
  • Occasional lifting or carrying items 40-50 lbs.
  • Working in confined spaces and close quarters periodically.
  • Climbing stairs and ladders and working on catwalks around equipment.
  • Operation of forklifts, tractors, skid-steers, gantry cranes, & rigging equipment.
  • Bending, stooping, and twisting to reach areas for repair on piping, equipment or tanks.
  • Exposure to various weather conditions.
  • Exposure to both high and low temperatures.
  • Operation of hand or power tools.
  • Knowledge of proper personal protective equipment.
