Boulder County Public Health (BCPH) Community Health Division is seeking to hire Youth Advisors, who will work to foster positive change in Boulder County. Youth Advisors will work collaboratively with staff, youth, and community partners to implement and evaluate a range of approaches to promote healthy behaviors, influence social norms, and build capacity among youth in Boulder County. This position will learn about public health approaches, communication strategies, social media outreach, health equity, and educational campaigns while building skills to create lasting change in Boulder County.
The Tobacco Education & Prevention Partnership (TEPP) Youth Advisor will work alongside one other TEPP Youth Advisor, the Youth Advisor Supervisor and the larger TEPP team to address and prevent tobacco use specifically related to youth vaping in the City of Boulder. They will help carry out an advertising campaign aimed at changing perceptions of vaping among young people. This role will also inform on and assist in the development and delivery of a support program for peers looking to quit tobacco use and vaping. This position will start promptly.
This Youth Advisor will be one of six Youth Advisors who work collaboratively as part of a larger Youth Advisor team (from across three programs; Community Substance Abuse Prevention Program, Tobacco Education and Prevention Partnerships, and Inspire Youth Connections) and meet at least once a week.
This position will work virtually, in-person, and/or in a hybrid format, depending on the team needs and work required to complete tasks. This is an hourly position with an anticipated end date of December 31, 2022. This position will work 5-10 hours per week, Monday-Friday in the afternoons/evenings year-round. There will also be some weekend events that you would be given the option to attend. In-person meetings will take place at the Sundquist Building, located at 3482 Broadway St., Boulder, CO 80304. Under Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), this position is non-exempt (eligible for overtime).
Boulder County requires its employees to reside in the state of Colorado as of the first day of work.
Hiring Rate : $18.02 hourly
Tentative Hiring Timeline:
- First Round Interviews: October 3rd - 7th
- Reference Checks: 10th - 14th
1. Provides input and perspective in the development of materials and programming related to youth vaping prevention and education to ensure work is youth centered
2. Provides peer-to-peer coaching, education, and mentoring to assist peers looking to quit vaping and tobacco use
3. Engage in conversations with other young people around quitting and preventing substance use, specifically as it relates to vaping
4. Participates in monthly meetings of the Healthy Futures Coalition (HFC) and Healthy Futures Youth Coalition (HFYC)
5. Advocates for youth substance abuse prevention and mental health promotion at Boulder County Public Health and in the broader community as a member of the TEPP team
6. Develops resources and participates in outreach and educational activities that support youth substance abuse prevention and mental health promotion
7. Coordinates and collaborates with other Boulder County Public Health Youth Advisors, youth-oriented leadership groups and adult partners
8. Performs other duties, as assigned
9. May be reassigned in emergency situations

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Boulder County is looking for well qualified candidates to fill our positions. In this position, we are looking for someone c urrently enrolled in high school, GED, or a recent high school/GED graduate (must be between 15-20 years of age at the time of hire). Previous employment or leadership experience is not required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Youth Advisors are responsible for ensuring they can get to work, in-person meetings or events (pending COVID-19 guidelines) either via their own transportation or utilizing public transport. All Boulder County employees will receive an EcoPass which offers unlimited ride on all local, regional and airport bus and rail services
- Must be able to work remotely from home and be willing to come into the office pending COVID restrictions

- Bilingual in Spanish and English

- Must be comfortable working and having conversations with other young people as related to preventing substance use, and more specifically as it relates to vaping.
- Enthusiasm for building community relationships.
- Commitment to health equity - ensuring that everyone has a fair and just opportunity to be as healthy as possible.
- Must practice cultural competency - be able to respectively work with people of various identities/abilities, cultures, and backgrounds in an inclusive and nonjudgmental fashion
