Position Summary

The Volunteer Coordinator will be responsible for developing, implementing, and supervising an active volunteer program within the LA County.

Pay Rate

$30.00/hr. - $35.00/hr.

Essential Functions

  • Required to provide training to Corps use of volunteers and Salvation Army orientation.
  • Assist the Corps and Programs in determining their volunteer needs and help them develop job descriptions as appropriate.
  • Work with the Corps and Programs to develop a series of short-term volunteer projects.
  • Develop a process for recruitment, registration, background checks and implementation of volunteers.
  • Create material to be used for recruitment and general community outreach.
  • Access current and new systems for working with volunteers (database and documentation) and determine how to create a more centralized system to accomplish same, i.e., screen, interview, train, assign, track and evaluate volunteers.
  • Develop opportunities for appropriate training and orientation of volunteers prior to assigning them to a particular task.
  • Create and maintain a data base for volunteer records to track significant information, such as addresses and contact info, as well as relevant statistics, i.e., number of volunteers, number of new volunteers, and number of hours worked.
  • Provide quarterly reports reflecting pertinent statistical information such as how many new volunteers, how man current volunteers, how many volunteer hours worked, accounting of expenditures and other reporting as may be required.
  • Develop a system to not only evaluate volunteers but to provide volunteer feedback to ensure their experience is positive.
  • Develop a volunteer recognition system to acknowledge volunteer milestones.
  • Support the efforts to organize volunteers for the Thanksgiving and Christmas Day dinners for the community.
  • Support the efforts connected with the Christmas Programs of the Salvation Army. This includes but is not limited to: Toy and Joy, food drives, and other ministries that may need help.
  • Coordinate with Public Relations to support any special events for volunteers and develop information on the website regarding volunteer recruitment and activities.
  • Establish working relations with other organizations and TSA partners to assess opportunities where they can get involved through volunteerism.
  • Discuss any problems associated with volunteers with the LA Metro Coordinator.
  • Attend and participate in staff and committee meetings as requested.
  • Represent The Salvation Army at appropriate public meetings with organizations, corporate representatives and other community members as requested.
  • Establish, development and facilitate an LA Metro Echelon Chapter.
  • Collaborate and partner with OC and SD regional office volunteer coordinators.
  • Work closely with Director of Corporate Engagement, Divisional Director of Development and Divisional Director of Human Resources to ensure Divisional volunteer needs are addressed.

Working Conditions

  • Must be in good physical health and mental health, capable of meeting the demands of the program.
  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis.
  • Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinets drawers, and reach overhead.
  • Ability to operate telephone.
  • Ability to operate a desktop or laptop computer.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 lbs.
  • Ability to access and produce information from a computer.
  • Ability to understand written information.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have supervisory ability.
  • 3-5 years’ experience in volunteer program development and coordination.
  • Familiar with Word, Excel, Publisher, and/or other appropriate desktop applications.
  • Must have the ability to work and relate well with people.
  • Must be able to read, write and communicate in English.
  • Must be able to type 45 wpm.
  • Meet all health and safety regulations as defined by the Health Department as well as The Salvation Army.
  • Ability to work in a team environment yet is self-directed.
  • Must have a valid California Driver’s License.
  • Before hire submit a copy of DMV Driving Record with less than two (2) violations (moving or accident) in the last twelve months to be eligible for this position.
  • Before hire must pass Fleet Safety Test of The Salvation Army. Must pass test to be hired for this position.
  • Certification by and participation in The Salvation Army’s Fleet Safety Program on an annual basis.
  • May not obtain more than two (2) violations (moving or accidents) in one year.
  • Salvation Army Fleet Safety Policy dictates that persons no longer meeting the qualifications of this position, if more than two (2) violations in a 12-month period accrue to their DMV Driving Record, employee will be required to attend traffic school at their expense or termination will be required.

  • Microsoft Word and Excel required.
  • Microsoft PowerPoint, helpful.
  • Lotus Notes, helpful.
  • Working knowledge of integrated database applications and ability to use new software programs with basic training.
