Position Summary

Sacramento Charter High School is seeking a high school counselor to enhance and support educational goals and contribute to the physical, social, emotional, and intellectual safety for all students. The counselor serves as a resource to student advisories ensuring that students are on track to graduate and prepared for college. He/she is directly responsible for scheduling, testing and crisis intervention.


Candidates must hold the belief that all children can succeed academically and socially and this belief must drive him or her to be relentless in his or her work.


The Academic Counselor reports to the Site Lead.


Responsibilities of the Counselor will include:

  • Provides support to the student advisories to ensure the advisors have the tools necessary for being a mentor and positive role model for assigned students and for communication with their parents.
  • Completes student schedules.
  • Communicates information to advisors, students and parents on college preparation and entrance requirements. Provide individual counseling as needed in this area.
  • Develops and present workshops for advisories, advisors, parents or students for college preparation.
  • Refers students needing intensive diagnosis to specialists and cooperating agencies.
  • Assists as needed with parent/advisors or teacher conferences.
  • Counsels students with special needs including truants, potential dropouts, academically deficient individuals and students with social or behavior problems. Develop educational goals for students with high- risk behavior.
  • Works closely with the EL and Special Education coordinator to ensure students are receiving proper modifications, assessments, class placement and additional support.
  • Develops and present workshops for advisories, parent and student for low students not meeting academic goals.
  • Provides student crisis intervention as needed.
  • Prepares reports and analyzes data on student academic progress with regard to testing and A-G requirements.
  • Assists advisory teachers with Individualized Student Learning Plans.
  • Individually interact and meet with students regarding progress towards graduation requirement completion.
  • Provide assistance to teachers/staff regarding referrals, cps reports, crisis management and all other issues pertaining to social/emotional issues.
  • Assist with all aspects of the college application process, including SAT/ACT, FAFSA, CSU/UC applications, Scholarships, etc.
  • Provide recruitment support (attend open houses, meet with and assess transcripts for incoming students, ensure appropriate placement).


Qualifications

We are seeking a results-driven leader committed to the St. HOPE Public Schools mission, high expectations and his or her own professional growth.


Required:

  • Knowledge of counseling techniques, theory, ethics and associated legal confidentiality requirements, state Education Code and other applicable laws, rules and regulations
  • Experience working with diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds
  • Valid Pupil Personnel Services credential with a specialization in School Counseling issued by the California Commission for Teacher Preparation and Licensing.
  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably with a major in education, social work, psychology, or related field
  • Pass a criminal background check


Highly Desired (but not required):

  • Master’s degree, preferably with a major in counseling, social work, psychology, or related field or a commitment to obtain such master’s degree within a maximum of three years.
  • At least 2 years of full-time relevant experience in an urban, underserved community
  • Bilingual speaking, reading, and writing abilities (Spanish or Vietnamese)
  • Teaching experience

St. HOPE Public Schools offer a competitive salary and benefits commensurate with qualifications and experience. This is a full time, exempt position.
