Position Summary
**This is a grant funded 12-month faculty position.**
The Academic Support & Retention Specialist is a member of an integrated college team, providing individual academic and personal support to an assigned group of community college students as they progress through their Workforce program. This person also works as a part of the Accelerating Student Completion; Encouraging New Dreams (ASCEND) advising team. The ASCEND program helps community college students earn degrees as quickly as possible, with the goal of graduating at least 50% of students within three years.
This position will be housed at the Technology Center Student Support Desk, helping to advise all Workforce programs.
This Academic Support & Resource Specialist will focus on advising, outreach, data tracking, recruiting and duties as assigned to support student success for our ASCEND and Workforce student population.
Duties and Responsibilities
ASCEND Support
- Delivers comprehensive advisement support services to an assigned group of students through degree completion.
- Reviews student progress and tracks student use of academic support services.
- Conducts regular outreach to other faculty and college staff as needed to support student success.
- Maintains accurate tracking data and notes for each assigned student, recommending appropriate referrals and opportunity programs.
- Supports annual recruitment of new students into the program.
- Organizes periodic special events and programs for students, faculty, and staff.
- May conduct or support delivery of student seminars on issues of importance to students.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Academic & Resource Support
- Advises and Recruits students enrolled or seeking to enroll in degree programs related to Advanced Manufacturing, Electric Distribution Engineering Technology, and other Workforce programs as assigned.
- Communicates with new and continuing students to provide information and resources.
- Participates in college open houses and community recruitment events.
- Assists students with accessing Blackboard, email, and Bridge
- Documents and maintains records of student contact and referrals in Degree Works and Access.
- Greets students, faculty, and guests to the Division. Directs them to appropriate contacts
- Coordinates special events as needed.
- Coordinates tutoring requests
- Refers students to support services, including but not limited to accessibility services, career services, testing, advising, tutoring, etc.
- Monitors students’ academic performance
- Accepts and performs duties as assigned to drive the College’s Vision, to fulfil the College’s Mission, and to abide by the College’s Values.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Master's in a relevant discipline preferred
Experience
- minimum of two years academic advisement experience
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong understanding of the needs of community college students.
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Demonstrated ability to work well with faculty, staff, and administrators.
- Ability to enter, monitor and interpret student data accurately.
- Strong computer skills, particularly Microsoft Office (Access); and aptitude to learn new systems as needed.
- Required to work a full 37.5 hours a week
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule that could include early morning, evening hours, or Saturdays (College Recruitment Events).
- Ability to relate to a diverse population and to maintain composure when faced with difficult situations.
- Ability to multi-task and organize, prioritize, and follow multiple projects and tasks through to completion with attention to detail.
- Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, and to relate to others in a professional, helpful manner.
- Ability to analyze programs, identify solutions, and take appropriate action to resolve problems, using independent judgement and decision making processes.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other department staff, faculty, students, and the public.
- Ability to follow College policies and procedures.
Licensure/Certification Required:
- Valid driver’s license required.
