The Financial Analysis and Accounting division of Human Services and Public Health (HSPH) is seeking an Accounting Specialist. This position will research, review, reconcile, and correct discrepancies and/or coding errors found in childcare, emergency, and foster care payments.


Location and hours:
This position is hybrid and will work at the Hennepin County Government Center at 300 South 6th St Minneapolis, MN 55487 with work remote work as job duties require. Work hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. While this position is designated as hybrid, based on current requirements hires must reside in Minnesota or Wisconsin.

You must be a current regular or probationary employee of Hennepin County to apply for this position.

In this position, you will:
  • Manage the daily banking for the Representative Payee clients, this includes the daily downloads and clearing out exceptions.
  • Prepare daily P.O. box deposits and get the funds entered into the client’s accounts and clear out deposits as they come through the bank.
  • Process the weekly batch of checks in the Hennepin County Representative Payee System (HCRPS) and verify that the checks printed.
  • Review deposits for clients and make sure funds were deposited into the correct account.
  • Approve and/or reject purchase card transactions and provide thorough explanation as to what is needed to fix the issue.
  • Provide back up support to process time sensitive payments for the Emergency Rental Assistance program through the Payment Request Center.
  • Prepare various reports such as monthly social security deposits, purchase card transactions and 30 series check report.
  • Prepare direct pay requests as requested by the CAPP unit or when requested by the social security liaison.
  • Assist with accounts receivable work as needed.
Need to have:
  • One of the following:
    • Three years or more of experience in maintaining financial records.
    • Three years or more of post-secondary education in areas related to business or accounting.
    • A combination of related post high school education and experience that equals at least three years.
Nice to have:
  • Experience:
    • Processing Hennepin County payments or working in accounts payable.
    • Performing mathematical calculations accurately.
    • Using Excel and/or similar database and spreadsheet applications to interpret reports, tables, and charts.
    • Using Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Teams)
  • Ability to:
    • Prioritize work to meet deadlines with accuracy and attention to detail.
    • Take initiative in solving problems and using sound judgement when problems arise.
    • Read, understand, and follow complex instructions.
    • Maintain confidentiality and work with protected information.
  • Knowledge of:
    • Banking systems including debit and credit processes.
    • General accounting principles.
