About the Opportunity


The UNC System Office invites applications for an Accounting Technician Journey position. This position serves an integral role in the daily operations of the Controller’s office to review and develop business process solutions that enable the organization to achieve goals, ensuring accountability, accuracy and efficiency in payment and cash management processes.

Responsibilities include:

  • Audit, approve and manage the volume and workflow of all vouchers submitted with a high level of accuracy and speed.
  • Manage and/or perform a thorough audit of all vouchers submitted through PeopleSoft and applying a thorough knowledge of state, federal and university policies, procedures, and guideline, ensuring compliance.
  • Verify and ensure all documentation requirements have been met and required supporting documentation is present to support the expense.
  • Identify and document vouchers that are not acceptable for AP approval. Communicate issues and work with departments to bring about a timely resolution.
  • Determine payment action on approved vouchers to ensure compliance with payment standards and supplier terms and takes discounts when appropriate.
  • Prioritize and complete assignments to meet pay cycle schedules and deadlines to include express check and month-end cutoff.
  • Provide PeopleSoft technical assistance to departments on how to correct system problems, close/delete vouchers, and determine the payment status of a voucher.
  • Provide assistance to departments regarding policies, procedures, and guidelines and inform them of changes.
    Audit and manage the volume and workflow of travel reimbursements, ensuring accuracy and compliance to System Office, State, and Federal policies, procedures and guidelines governing travel reimbursements.
  • Maintain a thorough knowledge of travel policies and procedures and ensure documentation requirements are met.
    Communicate reconciliation issues and recommend changes to reimbursement to maintain policy and accuracy standards.
  • Serves as a backup for other operational activities during staff absences; other duties as assigned.

This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement, consistent with System Office policy. UNC System employees are generally required to reside in North Carolina, within a 2-hour commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

The UNC System Office includes the offices of the President and other senior administrators of the multi-campus University of North Carolina System. System Office staff is responsible for executing the policies of the UNC Board of Governors and providing University-wide leadership in the areas of academic affairs, business and financial management, long-range planning, student affairs, research, legal affairs, and government relations. The UNC System Office also has administrative oversight of a number of University affiliates, including PBS North Carolina, the North Carolina Arboretum, the NC State Education Assistance Authority, and University of North Carolina Press.

About the Team
The Business Affairs unit is responsible for creating the unified budget and administering the University's financial affairs. The unit has overall responsibility for administering the financial affairs of the UNC System Office along with fiscal coordination for affiliated entities including PBSNC and NC State Education Assistance Authority.

Minimum Education, Experience, and Skills
High school diploma or equivalency and one year of experience in accounting work; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Required Competencies
Advanced accounting principles and Excel (Formula, PIVOT, etc.) knowledge. Ability to understand and incorporate technology and systems quickly and be proactive in finding ways to improve current operations in conjunction with regulatory policies and procedures. Strong understanding of all facets of operations in the central accounting office and how these components relate to financial management, reporting, and internal controls. Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to present and communicate complex information both written and orally before a variety of audiences. Ability to apply thorough knowledge of a government accounting methods, procedures, and accounting practices. Ability to apply knowledge of a broad range of technology, financial systems, and packages. Ability to develop formula for complex spreadsheets; and set up automated procedures and resolve operational issues. Ability to manage a variety of transactions which may require considerable financial program knowledge; monitor and manage financial accounts for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with accounting standards and regulations and/or program laws and regulations. Ability to be responsive in a deadline driven environment. and work with minimal supervision. Perform several administrative functions and various financial functions of considerable complexity.

Preferred Education, Experience, and Skills
Experience with NC Financial System (NCFS), PeopleSoft and Microsoft Office. Bachelor’s degree with 12 credit hours of accounting coursework; or Associate’s degree in accounting; or Associate’s degree in business or related discipline with 12 credit hours of accounting coursework; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
