JOB TITLE: ADVOCATE
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: DV PROGRAM DIRECTOR OR SENIOR ADVOCATE
CLASSIFICATION:NON-EXEMPT
POSTION SUMMARY:
Participates in the activities of a multidisciplinary team engaged in the delivery of non-residential domestic violence services. Develops a particular area of expertise in which she/he excels and shares that expertise, when needed, with other team members. Participates in the formulation and implementation of individual client goal plans and individualized services. Maintains a caseload and provides or arranges all supportive services to clients.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Acquires and improves skills and applies basic professional counseling techniques in the discovery of individual client needs and assists in the development of activities designed to meet those needs.
Responds to individual and community agencies’ requests for initial client intake/crisis intervention [intakes/crisis intervention may take place at the Agency’s facilities or at other appropriate locations].
Evaluates the needs of her/his assigned caseload, working with the client to establish a list of needs and assets and develops, with the clients, relevant goals. Promotes wellness through the encouragement of positive goal setting.
Provides individual or group case management and/or domestic violence counseling to assigned caseload on a regularly scheduled basis.
Adheres to the Illinois Domestic Violence Act (IDVA) by obtaining valid releases of information, per client’s request, with family, friends and community agencies in order to effectively advocate on the clients behalf.
Maintains appropriate client records reflecting services provided to clients and progress made toward established goals.
Engages in appropriate safety planning and linkage of services with clients.
Participates in case review meetings on a weekly basis with her/his direct supervisor to discuss individual client progress and alternative approaches.
Records on a timely basis, accurate documentation of activities and services provided.
Attends all staff meetings and participates in other programs or community agency meetings, as requested.
Participates in in-service or continuing education, as requested.
Sustains a working relationship with other client-service teams within the Agency or community to ensure continuity of care for all individuals.
Provides assistance and advice to other case managers or staff within the Agency.
Gives and receives support from other staff members within each of their respective areas of influence and expertise.
Educates other community groups or professionals through presentations on Agency programs/domestic violence, as requested.
Frequent written and verbal communications with clients, referral sources and other employees.
Performs all job functions consistent with confidentiality regulations, ethical practices and other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:*
Ability to prepare and maintain effective case files.
Ability to participate in and successfully complete a comprehensive training program.
Ability to provide sincere interest necessary to work with client population.
Ability to engage potential clientele and/or maintain current clients in services by providing support and encouragement.
Must acquire and apply the skills necessary for empathetic and empowering counseling/crisis intervention techniques and methods.
Possess high physical and emotional energy needed to handle the array of circumstances that may arise.
Basic computer skills.
Demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills.
Skills in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, staff and the public
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree Required.
EXPERIENCE:
One year full time experience providing professional counseling preferred. Demonstrated skills in individual, group case management.
CERTIFICATE/LICENSE:
Completion of the 40-hour domestic violence training as required by the Illinois Domestic Violence Act (IDVA) from an Illinois Certified Domestic Violence Professional (ICDVP) approved training site.
