Raise a Child of The Carolinas (The RACC) is a 501c3 non-profit organization focused on exposing youth to educational opportunities that are underrepresented in their communities, thus inspiring them to reach their full potential. The RACC organization was started in 2018 and provides local children with tutoring and seasonal camps. The RACC also partners with Mecklenburg County Schools to offer after school education solutions to supplement the day learning process.

We are currently seeking a part-time teacher assistant.

Provide Academic Leadership*

  • Tutors a small group of students in the content area of English, Reading, or Math and other subjects as designated; utilize scientifically research-based materials and lessons.
  • Assists in developing students' cognitive capacity, increasing academic skill development, and respect for learning; fostering students' self-esteem and motivation through positive interaction.
  • Be directly supervised by the Site Coordinator and Program Director
  • Attend scheduled meetings with Site Coordinator and Program Director to coordinate program design, evaluation process, and outreach efforts.
  • Work closely with Site Coordinator and Program Director to:
  • Organize a schedule of academic and enrichment activities.
  • Implement evaluation tools.

Serve as a liaison between the school day staff & after school staff

  • Facilitate evaluation requirements with school-day teachers, including dissemination and collection of teacher surveys.
  • Obtain updates on student needs/progress reports.
  • Coordinate student and staff outreach, including communication between school-day teachers and after school staff.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians regarding student progress and performance.

Design academic curriculum

  • Ensure academic activities are aligned with district curriculum standards.
  • Develop individualized academic plans for all students enrolled in the Program
  • Assess students’ needs and interests to design an effective academic Program.
  • Evaluate student progress and Program effectiveness.
  • Be prepared to teach each day with lesson plans, activities, and resources.
  • Respect the classroom by maintaining order and not allowing students to touch any items in the classroom that belong to the classroom teacher.
  • Welcome and supervise the work of leaders/volunteers assigned to your classroom.
  • Provide direction and encouragement to leaders/volunteers.

  • Provide general supervision of students during the Program including meal time, homework, recreation, and transitions.
  • Assist and support Site Coordinator and staff as needed.
  • Participate in and evaluate the effectiveness of activities and projects.
  • Instruct students on the proper use of supplies.
  • Participate in school site staff meetings and on-going training.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Prepare and implement enrichment activities with support from Site Coordinator, teachers, and other leaders.
  • Participate in fundraising activities.

General Responsibilities

  • Be punctual and prepared for the day. Daily / predictable attendance is expected.
  • Follow and support the discipline system utilized by the Program.
  • Listen to the students who attend the After School Program. They need a fresh, friendly face and someone to ask them how their day went. Talk with each of them as often as possible and genuinely care about their responses. Maintain a positive attitude in your work and interaction with staff and students. Never show favoritism.
  • Follow all guidelines contained in this handbook as well as those of the school district and school you are working in. Know the rules and enforce them with kindness and consistency. Always treat students with kindness and respect.
  • Exhibit and practice courtesy, respect, and professional judgment in dealings with all students, parents, supervisors, colleagues, school administration and staff, etc.
  • Maintain confidential information about children, families or staff and do not discuss personal information in front of others.
  • Make sure accurate attendance is taken and that students are signed out when they leave the program. Attendance sheets are to be put in the designated location for your center (see Site Coordinator).
  • A staff member must be present at all times with students who are signed into the Program. Students are not allowed to go back to their classroom and/or locker without an adult. In most cases, students should not go back to their classrooms or lockers, they are responsible for bringing needed materials with them.
  • Set a positive example for the students in the Program by following the program rules.
  • Treat all people and property with respect.
  • Use program supplies wisely. Do not use school supplies unless you are told differently.
  • Read all information sent to you in a timely manner. Keep it for reference if necessary.
  • Clean up areas used by the Program, take trash out, and sweep the floor if necessary.
  • Make sure restrooms are left in good order. If cleaning is needed, please tell a custodian
  • Turn off lights and lock doors as necessary.
  • If a child is picked up late, it is the responsibility of the Site Coordinator to stay with the student until he or she is picked up. Contacts listed on the student’s registration form should be called if it is 15 minutes past dismissal time and no one has come to get them. In the event the parent/guardian or emergency contact cannot be reached after 30 minutes, the Site Coordinator may notify the Charlotte Mecklenburg police.
  • Maintain open lines of communication with other Program staff and with the school staff, as well as parents/guardians.
  • Have fun! Smile! The students will react to your leadership and mood, so keep it positive.

EVALUATION: Performance of this position will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Raise a Child of the Carolinas employment policy.
