Founded in 1887, the Fife Lake Public Library (FLPL) began in an old school house and the community raised the funds to build a beautiful new building which was dedicated in 2005. The Library is located in beautiful Northern Michigan, surrounded by woods, great hiking, wildlife and about a 20 minute drive from Lake Michigan. We are a Class 1, rural library and we do much more than provide books and movies to our community. We are the senior center and community center and we double as the school librarians as well. FLPL provides free services, resources, and programs for folks in the community as well as the local schools and students who otherwise may not have access, this contributes to creating better financial outcomes for folks experiencing poverty, creating better futures for the youth in our community and will strengthen our community. The VISTA will build capacity and foster sustainability at the library and the school libraries so that they can provide more expansive services and reach a larger population. Library services and literacy are an important component for eradicating poverty, contributing to better education outcomes for youth and a thriving community.
Member Duties : Research library school libraries curriculum, develop school library curriculum and lesson plans. Implement and evaluate curriculum and lesson plans. Review current fundraising and grant writing process. Develop and evaluate fundraising events. Research and write grant proposals. Create manual for fundraising events and grants. Evaluate community career and post secondary education needs. Meet with community college representatives, local business, trade schools, Michigan Works, etc. to learn about resources and how we can partner. Develop, implement and evaluate events, programs and resources to promote career development and postsecondary education development. Create manual for resources and partnerships. Review current volunteer process, forms and handbook. Discover area volunteers would be most beneficial. Develop plan to recruit volunteers, intake form, interview process, orientation and handbook. Train staff on curriculum, volunteer system, lessons and programs.
