Position title: Analyst – Data Manager at Veterans Affairs Portland Healthcare System

We are seeking to hire a full-time analyst to join our team of investigators, biostatisticians, and analysts working on a new Cooperative Studies Program, COVID-19 Pharmacotherapy Effectiveness in the VA Healthcare System (COPE-VA). This is an exciting interagency collaboration between BARDA, FDA, VA, and other federal partners to use an adaptive platform observational study design to determine the effectiveness and comparative effectiveness of novel therapeutic agents authorized for the outpatient treatment of COVID-19 in Veterans.

We are seeking to hire an analyst to support the development of analytic datasets using national VA electronic data and perform some of the initial analyses. We are a highly collaborative team with investigators across Portland, Puget Sound, and West Haven VA centers. Members participate in many aspects of study development as well as co-authorship on scientific manuscripts.

The analyst will have master’s or PhD-level training with a background in biostatistics, epidemiology, or closely related field. Applicants with a bachelor’s degree will also be considered if they can demonstrate that they have the necessary practical experience. Desired skills include processing electronic health records and claims databases, creating analytic variables, and executing some analyses under the direction of the study’s senior biostatisticians, other analysts, and co-investigators. Experience with research in the VA and/or experience in clinical-epidemiological research is preferred. Knowledge of SQL and statistical software such as STATA, SAS, R is required.

Responsibilities for the analyst would include some of the following, depending on skillset:

  • Accessing the VA’s electronic health records in the Corporate Data Warehouse (CDW) using SQL to obtain original data for the project
  • Cleaning CDW data as needed (e.g., for laboratory tests)
  • Creating analytic variables using CDW data
  • Presenting preliminary summary statistics of the analytic variables to the team
  • Executing some of the preliminary analyses under the direction of the investigators, such as initial regression analyses, and presenting the results to the team
  • Communicating with other study analysts and study investigators to relay results and optimize analytic plans

Salary is set by HR based on the candidate’s education and experience, target GS-11 ($70,583-92,104) or GS-12 ($84,923-110,404) depending on qualification. The position is available at 1.0 FTE (i.e., full-time). Candidates must be US citizens. Pay: $70,583.00 - $110,404.00 per year
