Job description
The Virginia Zoological Park is currently seeking an Animal Registrar that develops and maintains record keeping systems. Researches and acquires necessary animal permits.
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
Manages and maintains the zoo’s animal records via the Zoological Information Management System (ZIMS).- Manages and monitors animal transactions and coordinates with Zoological Manager, Veterinary staff, and Lead Keepers to ensure legal compliance with local, state, federal and international laws, government regulations and industry specific standards.
- Acquires and manages all local, state, and federal wildlife permits and licenses.
- Operates as the primary liaison between the institution and government agencies.
- Arranges animal shipping via airlines or other shipping methods and is familiar with IATA guidelines.
- Serves as the administrator of our animal records database ZIMS.
- Manages and creates reports for all animal loans.
- Manages the animal census/inventory process.
- Trains staff in animal record keeping, records management and animal data entry standards.
- Participates in the AZA accreditation process.
- Has knowledge of cooperative animal management programs such as studbooks, SSPs, TAGs, etc.
- Participate in animal care meetings with recording and maintaining meeting minutes.
- Participate in medical procedures and function as a scribe - capture accurate and detailed descriptions throughout medical procedure for veterinarian.
- Performs other duties and projects as assigned by the General Curator and Veterinarian.
- Have knowledge of the concepts, principles, and practices of zoo animal records management.
- Possess skills enabling consistent techniques of data input in a careful, complete, concise, and accurate manner.
- Have the ability to recognize and resolve animal information anomalies, mistakes, and omissions.
- Have good knowledge of computer hardware, software, and peripherals.
- Have the ability to learn and apply knowledge of animal records software.
- Have some knowledge of zoological nomenclature and medical terminology.
- Have the ability to collect and collate information from a variety of sources into concise and accurate reports.
- Possess clear and concise oral and written communication skills.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, particularly the General Curator, the Veterinarian and other zoological institution registrars.
Work requires broad knowledge in a general profession or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
One year of experience in zoological registration or cataloguing for professional museums.
Minimum of one (1) year work experience in an accredited zoo as a registrar or animal keeper.- The preferred candidate will have two (2) years of experience working in an AZA accredited institution as a registrar, zookeeper, or similar position.
- The preferred candidate will have completed the AZA Institutional Records Keeping course, completed the Zoological Registrars Association Training Certificate Program and/or possess professional certifications in records or museum management.
