Performs the duties of the Dispatcher, Kennel Technician and Officer within the Animal Services facility as assigned. This position is intended to assist in all areas of Animal Services operation..


Essential Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

While in uniform, responds to citizen requests for assistance and initiates law enforcement activity necessary to insure compliance with Colorado, Mesa County, and City of Grand Junction animal control laws.

May include investigation, observation and collection of evidence as it relates to animal control violations; may issue warnings, penalty assessments and/or summons as necessary to address illegal activities regarding animal control, public health and public safety.

Performs duties to include data entry/management, cashier, public contact/assistance, filing, dispatching, answering telephones, assisting the public, maintenance and cleaning of the facility or as assigned by the Animal Services Manager.

May investigate reports of possible disease transmission to humans and initiates necessary actions.

May investigate animal cruelty, neglect or abandonment or animal attacks and will testify and present evidence in court, providing proper documentation.

Performs humane euthanasia according to established training protocols.

Assists and advises the public as they adopt, redeem, and/or release animals completes necessary paperwork. Helps citizens' problem solve animal control issues and complaints in a proactive, professional fashion.

May include behavioral and physical assessment of animals and oversight of adoption, transfer and foster programs. Provides direct monitoring of the impound status and maintains the body condition of the animals held at the Animal Services Building.

Completes janitorial and light maintenance within the building and on the grounds of Animal Services; monitors and requisitions animal/janitorial supplies used with the center.

Cleans and sanitizes animal holding areas and facility areas on a daily or as needed basis. Feed, water, and provide ongoing evaluations of animal health according with their needs.

Provides preventative maintenance as required.

May oversee volunteer, community service individuals.

May include serving as public relations person to education community regarding Animal Services functions and importance of being responsible pet owners. This could include education via schools and community organizations, public events and television programs as assigned by the Animal Services Manager.

Oral and written communications must be clear and effective.

Works as a member of a team of professionals that fosters a safe and positive environment .

Performs other related duties as assigned by the Animal Services Manager.


Minimum Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS:
Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent plus some training in animal control or law enforcement and two years experience working with the public and One year experience working with animals.

Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the job.

Licenses and Certifications:


Active Colorado Driver's License

Colorado Association of Animal Control Officers (Must be obtained after hire)

National Animal Control Association (To be obtained after hire)

State of Colorado Department of Agriculture Bureau of Animal Protection (To be obtained after hire)

Supplemental Information

PHYSICAL REQUIRMENTS AND WORKING ENVRIONMENT:

This position requires standing, stooping, sitting, bending, twisting, and lifting up to 85-100 pounds.

Must be able to pursue, capture and control a wide variety of different animals.

Work is often in a standard office environment, but also includes extensive driving, walking and field work in the community in any type of weather conditions.

Noise level is generally moderate, however can experience short-term, high decibel levels requiring Hearing protection. May be exposed to communicable diseases.

Must be available for shift work and overtime and pager/on-call and night, (on a rotational basis) .
