Primary Responsibilities

HDR is seeking a qualified, motivated architectural historian to support field projects and desktop reviews for projects throughout Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and support HDR projects throughout the United States. The primary responsibilities in this role include conducting research and architectural surveys, developing historic contexts, making National Register of Historic Places eligibility evaluations, assessing project effects, report writing, and assisting clients in complying with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, and its implementing regulations at 36 CFR Part 800.

In the role of Architectural Historian (Cultural Resources Specialist 1), we'll count on you to:

  • Conduct fieldwork, including reconnaissance and intensive-level survey, to identify historic properties for a variety of clients, including transportation, renewable energy/power, and federal agencies
  • Conduct research and develop historic contexts and other writing deliverables
  • Complete survey forms, determinations of eligibility, and reports that meet the requirements of the appropriate State Historic Preservation Office and our local, state, and federal clients
  • Complete projects with clear, specified objectives and understand the scope of the work being requested
  • Work independently on small projects, or assist other staff on larger projects
  • Perform other duties as needed
  • Travel to project locations, predominantly in Texas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma, although additional nationwide travel may be requested as needed
Qualifications


Minimum qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in History, Architectural History, Historic Preservation, or closely related field
  • Self-motivated, with excellent writing and communication skills
  • Willingness to travel and work under varied weather conditions, remotely, and within natural environments
  • Willingness to work in a team environment
  • Successful candidates should be familiar with the regulatory framework surrounding cultural resource management (i.e., Section 106, Section 4(f), NEPA, and SEPA)
  • Strong oral communication skills; basic computer skills (Microsoft Office products)
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous work experience in Section 106 NHPA compliance
  • Meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications Standards for Architectural History
  • Master’s degree in History, Architectural History, Historic Preservation, or closely related field
