Assistant Directors have responsibility for projects, functions, or processes within a department. These positions may recommend strategy and provide professional support to Directors and may have the authority to act on the Director's behalf. Assistant Directors typically supervise other staff but do not generally control the allocation of fiscal or human resources.

The Auraria Library is seeking candidates for the Assistant Director for Administrative and Operational Services, University Staff position.

Located in downtown Denver, Colorado, the Auraria Campus is home to three institutions of higher education – the University of Colorado Denver, Metropolitan State University of Denver, and Community College of Denver – both MSU Denver and CCD are Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI), and CU Denver is working toward HSI and Asian American Native American Pacific Islander (AANAPISI) designations. The Auraria Library serves the campus’ of over 35,000 students, the majority of whom are the first in their families to enroll in higher education. Most of our students are Black, Indigenous, and/or People of Color, and we also serve large populations of veterans, transfer students, adult learners, and other populations that have been historically underserved.

Position Emphasis:

The Assistant Director is responsible for the development of an evolving and clear vision and direction for the specific functions and services of the Administrative and Operational Services Division. This position has oversight of the library’s IT (includes desktop support and web services) HR, Fiscal, Communication, and Facilities (includes library security) functions. These areas involve two important aspects-supporting library stakeholder workflows, processes, and effectiveness and working externally in a highly complex tri-institutional environment that requires the ability to bring together campus partners around shared goals and initiatives.

This is a varied portfolio, and we understand candidates may not have direct experience in all areas, so we are emphasizing elements of collaboration and communication both internally and externally in blending these functions to provide a holistic support framework through a strong vision and implementation. In addition, the functions mentioned have a dotted reporting line to the Director due to tri-institutional communication and collaboration needs. While a dotted-line manager can provide feedback and assign work-related tasks, they function as an internal stakeholder who guides the work but has a limited scope.

The Assistant Director also provides inclusive leadership through shared decision-making for library-wide planning, personnel decisions, budget allocation, resource management, organizational effectiveness, program, and policy development as part of the library’s Administrative Team and in collaboration with the Department Heads group.

The Assistant Director demonstrates interest and skill in collaborating with individuals and groups within and beyond the library, across the campus, and in the broader regional and library professional communities; has strong organizational skills; the ability to work collaboratively and effectively both independently and as a team leader and member. The individual in this role possesses experience managing personnel and demonstrated collaborative team-building skills, including the ability to motivate, develop, and mentor others, and to welcome and support diverse ideas, cultures, and experiences. Finally, the Assistant Director is committed to fostering a diverse educational environment and workplace and responds effectively to changing campus needs and priorities. This position reports to the Director and University Librarian.

Nature of Work:

Strategic and operational administration:

  • Provide inclusive leadership through shared decision-making for library-wide planning, personnel decisions, budget allocation, resource management, organizational effectiveness, and program and policy development as part of the library’s Administrative Team and in collaboration with the Department Heads Group
  • Collaborate with Director to align the work of the division with library and campus strategic goals and directions
  • Advise library administration on campus policies and procedures, and state and federal laws pertaining to administrative and operating needs
  • Oversee the following areas:
    • Information technology including desktop support and web services
    • Human resources including payroll, hiring workflows, equity-centered employee recruitment and retention, compensation planning, recognition, professional development, and mentorship
    • Finance functions budgeting and accounting, fiscal management and processes, strategic budget planning
    • Facilities and building operations functions include project management, capital planning, design, and security.
    • Marketing and communications including brand development, print and electronic material creation, strategic communication campaigns, and social media.

  • Model inclusive excellence through specific actions, policies, and practices that support the library’s diversity goals in the recruitment, hiring, and retention of diverse employees

Organizational leadership and development:

  • Reduce ambiguity and build a community to maintain positive morale and effectively manage interpersonal as well as organizational conflict in collaboration with the Director and Department Heads
  • Assist the Director and Department Heads in addressing institutional and broader change implications by developing a person-centered approach that involves stakeholders, determining the impact of that change for individuals, and providing tools such as project management to effectively implement change
  • Function as a liaison and role model between the Administrative Team and Department Heads. This includes taking proactive action to:
    • Foster an inclusive organizational culture that is built on trust, accountability, transparent communication, and decision-making.
    • Assist Department Heads to gain an understanding of organizational challenges, issues, limitations, and opportunities.
    • Communicate division issues and needs (staffing/budget/resources) to the Administrative Team.

Supervision, Service, and Divisional leadership:

  • Supervise 5 other department and division leads and coordinators.
  • Serve on the library’s Administrative Team.
  • Participate on library, campus, regional, and national committees as appropriate.
  • Define a continually evolving vision for the division which includes providing a strategic direction for workflows, services, programming, projects, and tools; coordinating day-to-day functions; and identifying staffing, resource, and budget needs.
  • Ensure that all reports, direct and indirect, are successful in their roles through proactive coaching, development, and management.
  • Establish a strong partnership with the other library divisions to ensure alignment of cross-divisional workflows, communication, and initiatives.

Salary and Benefits:

The hiring range for this position has been established at $85,000 - $90,000.

The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in education, psychology, business, organizational development, public administration, health care, educational technology, social science, liberal arts, communications, accounting, finance, library science, or a directly related field from an accredited institution.
  • The position requires experience at the management level, including 3+ years of supervisory experience.
  • 4 or more years of progressively responsible experience in higher education including substantive experience in one or more of the following areas:
    • Information Technology
    • Human Resources
    • Fiscal Operations
    • Communication
    • Facilities Services

Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library school or program.
  • Higher education and/or library experience.
  • Experience with project management workflows and processes.
