The Chemical Engineering Department has three types of teaching labs: (1) the Ch En 170 lab (for freshmen), (2) the four Fundamentals labs (short 0.5 credit labs taught to coincide with core classes), and (3) the senior-level Unit Operations (UO) lab (ChE 479). The Assistant Lab Manager will assist the Lab Manager in developing, designing, assembling, and maintaining the semi-industrial equipment in these three types of labs, using her/his mechanical, electrical, safety, and computerized process control skills.

Essential Functions:

  • Help develop, implement, refine, and maintain semi-industrial equipment and instructional materials in the Fundamentals labs. There are four 0.5 credit labs, coinciding with courses in Fluid Dynamics, Material Science, Heat & Mass Transfer, and Process Control & Separations. These labs are very new and need updating and refining.
  • Support the freshman lab experiments (ChEn 170), including developing and building new or refined simple chemical engineering experiments and ensuring that appropriate safety measures are taken by the students.
  • Assist the UO Lab Manager with equipment maintenance and duties associated with the senior-level UO Laboratory (ChEn 479).
  • Assist faculty members and staff by arranging in-class teaching demonstrations.
  • Provide support for graduate research projects in the department related to equipment for experiments, materials issues, and safety practices.

Qualifications:

Required:

4 years of experience in building equipment that requires plumbing, electrical wiring, and implementation of computer interfaces (including computer control).

Preferred:

B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering or have graduated from a technical school (electronics technology, etc.).

Skills, abilities, knowledge, licenses, certifications: Good practical skills in mechanical devices, electrical wiring, and computer interfaces are required. Design experience in small lab experiment is preferred but not required. Knowledge and interest in safety practices are strongly preferred. Strong commitment to support of teaching in labs in a professional manner is required.
