About Us.

The Bio complexity Institute of the University of Virginia is seeking innovative and collaborative applicants for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of assistant professor as part of the Contagion Science Program. This unique and novel research program is a prestigious strategic research initiative funded by the University through its Prominence-to-Preeminence STEM Targeted Initiatives Fund . The Biocomplexity Institute serves as the program’s organizing unit with a broad and comprehensive partnership of the University of Virginia Schools of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS), Data Science (SDS), Medicine ( SOM ), and the College of Arts & Sciences ( A&S ). This initiative is designed to foster pan-university leadership and excellence in contagion science research and education.

The Role.

The new Contagion Science team member will contribute to the creation and promulgation of a research roadmap that leverages new and existing theoretical frameworks, concepts, and research ideas to address the interconnected nature of contagious phenomena, observed in computer sciences and related fields .

As a part of the Biocomplexity Institute , the faculty member will have a unique opportunity to explore the application of multidisciplinary data sciences , network systems modeling, computer science and engineering, machine learning or graph modeling and mining , interfacing with biological and health sciences, as well as social, behavioral, and economic sciences. Complementing individual research activity, incumbents will advance cross-disciplinary educational and training opportunities for diverse audiences, fostering an interest in and an increased understanding of mechanisms and characteristics underlying concepts of contagion.

This position will be made as a joint appointment between the Biocomplexity Institute, which will serve as the administrative home, and one of the participating schools or departments in the Contagion Science Program , which will serve as the tenure home. Potential appointments may be made in a variety of depar t ments, including but not limited to:

  • Systems and Information Engineering (SEAS)

  • Electrical and Computer Engineering (SEAS)

  • Computer Science (SEAS)

  • Mathematics (A&S)

  • Data Science (SDS)

Requirements.

A Ph.D. in a relevant computational field is required by the start date of the appointment. A commitment to teaching excellence is essential, as is evidence of an explicit commitment to diversity and of advancing understanding and outcomes for underrepresented groups. Successful candidates must have an emerging research portfolio in a computational field display and display a general interest in cross-cutting transdisciplinary research areas of relevance . Successful candidates will be expected to engage in funded research, teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and perform service for the institution and professional organizations.

All roles within the institute are restricted positions and are dependent upon project need, availability of funding, and performance. This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require walking some distance to attend meetings and programs. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment. This position also requires an Education Verification (FSAKA) .
