Position Summary

The Assistant Professor in Animal Science will assist Missouri farmers to increase their sustainability and profitability by optimizing animal health and productivity. This incumbent will be expected to develop a high-impact, nationally recognized research/extension program to address the critical and emergent issues in relevance to the small ruminant industry and conduct innovative laboratory and field research and outreach activities.

This is a 12-month, non-tenure track, full time position with 100% of responsibilities being research.

Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities

  • Develop a research/extension program to address critical issues.
  • Conduct innovative laboratory and field research.
  • Write grant proposals for extramural, competitive funding to support research and extension programs.
  • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Collaborate with faculty and outside stakeholders.
  • Contribute to relevant professional societies.
  • May be required to teach courses and conduct outreach activities relevant to their expertise and supervise graduate students.
  • Work with the University's research farm employees, facility managers, extension educators, producers, and industry partners.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must be highly motivated and creative.
  • Ability to conduct quality research and extension activities.
  • Ability to publish research articles in impactful peer-reviewed journals.
  • Grant writing skills.
  • Interpersonal, effective oral and written communication skills and willingness and ability to work in a tea-oriented environment with a diverse faculty are essential.

Education and Experience

  • Ph.D. in animal science, nutrition, production, and physiology or closely related field is required.
  • Experience in postdoctoral research and teaching is preferred.
  • Background with agricultural experimental design, database management, informatics and bio statistics are highly desirable.

Physical Requirements

  • Lift and carry objects weighting up to 50 lbs.
  • Farm operations such as livestock restraining and handling, equipment operation, and driving farm vehicles.
  • Possible exposure to animal wastes, allergens, and zoonotic agents.
