About the Department
The Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management is a multi-disciplinary department that addresses critical research questions related to human dimensions of natural and built environments, livable communities, youth development and physical activity, and tourism and economic development of rural and urban areas. The mission of PRTM is to advance and disseminate scholarship concerning management and use of natural and cultural resources for recreation, tourism, and sport through research, teaching, and public engagement.

Essential Job Duties
The Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management (PRTM) at North Carolina State
University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor, with a concentration in Equitable and Sustainable Sport and Tourism Event Management.

The Department is seeking candidates with the ability to bridge sport and tourism and event management research and teaching needs with a critical lens. Candidates are expected to work within the following realms of responsibility: Teaching and Mentoring of Undergraduate and Graduate Students; Discovery of Knowledge through Discipline-Guided Inquiry; Extension and Engagement with Constituencies outside the University; and Service to Professional Societies and the Discipline, and Service and Engagement within the University itself.

Further, the candidate is expected to conduct thought-provoking research in at least one of the following areas, but not limited to: Critical Event Studies; Mega-Events (including sports); Event Legacies, Sustainable Tourism; Sustainable Events; Sustainable Economics; Micro-Community Based Events; eSports; Music and Cultural Festivals; Events as Destinations; Events as Local Heritage and Identity; and Multi-Country/International Events. Lastly, as a tenure-track faculty line, candidates should demonstrate a critical and sustainable approach to events which may include (but is not limited to) examinations of sporting (including esports) or cultural events; event legacies; event impacts (including economic, environmental, cultural, and social); or the influence of events on tourism. We welcome candidates who conduct these examinations at any scale (e.g., mega events, micro events).

As a research-intensive university, candidates must show a willingness and ability to garner external and internal funding for research projects. Additionally, candidates must show a willingness and ability to publish in leading academic outlets and present at topically relevant conferences, both domestically and internationally, that will advance the significance of a critical, sustainable, and community focused lens on large-scale event management and design. As a land-grant institution robust and sustained engagement with sport, event, and tourism industry members is expected.

Additionally, desired candidates will teach across the PRTM curriculum in both the sport management major and parks, recreation, and tourism majors at both the graduate and undergraduate level. PRTM faculty hold a special regard for candidates with an expertise in and appreciation for teaching through various modalities including large general education courses; field experiences; collaborative learning; high impact teaching techniques; in-person, distance, and hybrid courses; study abroad opportunities; all centered on critical and sustainable, and events and event management.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Developing a productive line of research;
  • Engaging in external research funding initiatives;
  • Instructing undergraduate and graduate courses, with a teaching load of two courses per
    semester in the fall and spring semesters;
  • Contributing to curricular development within PRTM and alongside other relevant campus
    collaborators;
  • Serving on PRTM, CNR, and University-wide committees;
  • Engaging in relevant professional and public service activities;
  • Engaging in ongoing scholarly activity through the publication, presentation, or other
    related activity that is relevant to the candidate’s discipline, field of study, pedagogy,
    perspectives on DEI, and public dissemination of research.
  • Sustaining a robust network of sport, event, and tourism industry members to which
    research and teaching outputs are disseminated

Other Responsibilities
Perform other related duties as assigned by the department head.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Possess an earned PhD in leisure studies, parks and recreation, sports, tourism, design, urban policy, planning, or related field.
  • The hire is at the Assistant Professor rank with expectations that the candidate is at the early stages of their career in teaching, research, and engagement (with potential extension familiarity).
  • Applicants with ABD (all but dissertation) status will be considered, with appointment contingent upon degree completion prior to the position’s start date.

Other Required Qualifications
Selected candidates will aid PRTM in building on interdisciplinary, social science informed strengths
within a College of Natural Resources.

Additionally, as a mission of a land grant university, candidates will need to show effort in the areas of DEI within industries and community settings; cross industry and community collaborations; community and organizational development.

Preferred Qualifications
Candidates that show a background or having earned degrees (major or minor), certifications, or course work in the following fields is desirable: African Studies, African American Studies (Africana Studies, Black Studies); Asian Studies, Asian American Studies, GenderStudies (Women’s Studies); Indigenous Studies (Native American Studies, Aboriginal Studies), Latin America Studies, Latinx Studies (Latino/a Studies, Hispanic Studies), and LGBTQ (LGBTQIA2S+ Studies, Queer Studies).
