Wildlife Program - Coastal Region 6
Montesano, Washington is the current duty station, however, depending on the successful candidate, other duty stations within Region 6 may be considered.

Lead policy direction and operational functions for priorities focused on wildlife population conservation, wildlife management, and lands management!
Provide long range strategic planning, develop new initiatives, foster and advance partnerships, conduct contract management, and oversee Lands Division budgets and work plans.

Direct the operational functions of Region 6 Wildlife Areas that encompass approximately 30,000 acres and over 100 Water Access Sites and which are managed for wildlife habitat, hunting, fishing, boating, and other recreation.
Responsible for tactical and strategic planning regarding sometimes controversial wildlife management issues,
You will make decisions that influence the quality and quantity of fish and wildlife resources of the state, with direct impacts on resource/recreation based local businesses, and tourism within Region 6.
Motivate and provide leadership and vision for staff,
Guide all staff engaged in habitat and recreation management on wildlife areas and water access areas - this includes mentoring responsive staff to fill future leadership needs.
Thrive on building collaboration and teamwork,
Represent the agency when interfacing with the public, non-government organizations, legislators, Tribal Co-managers, and other state, federal, and local governments.

Some of what you will do as our Assistant Regional Wildlife Program Manager,
- Communicates policy goals and directions and explains production goals to all staff to ensure understanding and compliance.
- Evaluates and approves candidates for positions within Region 6, and makes recommendations for hiring and promotion.
- Mentors, coaches, and evaluates performance of all land management staff.
- Works collaboratively with Lands Division budget staff and funding entities in drafting initial budget for the wildlife and water access areas for submission to the Lands Division and the funding entity for approval.
- Monitors current and projects future expenditures to comply with the approved budget - accounts for deviations from projection.
- Is the Region 6 lead in development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of wildlife and water access area plans in close association with the funding entities, WDFW regional and headquarters staff, other partners, and members of the Wildlife Area Advisory Committees.
- Monitors work of staff to assure that the highest priority work items are being accomplished.
- Engages and collaborates with agency staff and funding entity, external parties, and constituents to form strategic plans and priorities.
- Compiles and analyzes information related to wildlife and access areas operations, from a variety of sources, forms conclusions, and communicates recommendations to the supervisor.
- Monitors daily work activities of all wildlife and access areas staff to ensure compliance with union contracts, agency policies, rules, procedures, and regulations. Directs staff regarding compliance with permits, policies, and procedures.
- Provides input to develop or modify operational plans, rules and policies, to adapt and respond to change.
- Communicates orally and in written documents, agency and Wildlife Program goals, policies, procedures to staff and interested parties (e.g., co-managers, stakeholders, agencies, regulatory entities, etc.).
- Represents the agency in technical or policy forums, and other public settings.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Work Setting, including hazards:
- Primarily office work and occasional field work.
- Schedule:
- Work hours are flexible, typically, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. – some evening and weekend work may be required, this includes attending nighttime meetings.
- May be expected to adjust the work schedule to meet business needs.
- Travel Requirements:
- Will require travel throughout Region 6 - approximately 30%.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- A Bachelor's degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science.
AND
- Five (5) years of professional experience in wildlife management or wildlife research, habitat management or habitat research, or fish management or fish research.
AND
- Demonstrated ability to build rapport, partner, and work collaboratively with WDFW cross-program staff, the public, tribes, and local, state, and federal agencies.
Please Note:
- Closely related qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-by-year basis.
- A Master’s degree in the applicable science will substitute for one (1) year of the required experience.
- A Ph.D. in the applicable science will substitute for two (2) years of the required experience.
Certifications/Licenses:
- A valid, unrestricted Washington or other State Driver’s License.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Knowledge of wildlife and ecological processes pertinent to the Northwest.
- Demonstrated experience and ability to prepare and present effective grant and funding requests.
- Demonstrated organization and time management skills to effectively prioritize workload and maximize efficiency.
Demonstrated ability to:
- Effectively oversee and manage complex budgets.
- Work collaboratively with members of the public with diverse opinions and backgrounds.
