This position will take primary responsibility for coordinating accessible materials and media (alternate format texts and possibly captioning) to students connected with the Accessibility Center, and coordinate with others on campus who are involved in assistive technology needs for students. This position is responsible for coordinating accommodation services related to accessible technology. This person will work with students, as well as faculty, and staff, to facilitate requests for accessible content by students.

Essential Functions

Alternate Format Materials Management

  • Responsible for determining appropriate accessible media (Alternate Format Materials) necessary for students to have access at the university. This is accomplished through an interactive process with the student to understand the impact of the student’s condition, barriers, their program, and other relevant factors.
  • Manage and coordinate requests for accessible academic materials for students approved for alternate format materials in a timely fashion.
  • Acquire, scan, and edit materials using software and hardware solutions that can render materials in needed format(s). Emboss, print, and otherwise render academic materials in final formats (e.g., PDF, EPUB, Braille, large print, audiobooks, etc.) usable by persons with print-related disabilities using a range of tools and vendors.
  • Work with UAC coordinators, campus partners (e.g., Center for Teaching and Learning), and faculty to ensure access to course materials and support accommodating students in the classroom.
  • Provide training and ongoing support to students and faculty/staff on accessible media processes and products.
  • Supervise student employees in the Accessibility Lab, including identifying staffing needs, hiring, onboarding, and training student employees who will support accessible media programs.
  • Maintain equipment, software, and technology products. Coordinate with Campus Life Technology and OIT for support of technology resources.

Accommodation Services and Assistive Technology

  • Advise students with disabilities, and other interested campus community members, about their options for accessible technologies and the channels for obtaining these, both free and for purchase options.
  • Manage the Accessibility Lab equipment loan program.
  • Manage student access to the Lab and associated spaces.

Outreach and Advisement

  • Engage and participate in campus outreach efforts through participation in campus, local, state, and regional conferences as appropriate, and as approved by UAC Director.
  • Advise members of the campus community on trends in assistive and accessible technology.
  • Provide training on accessible media to campus partners to enhance campus accessibility training of materials.
  • Under Accessibility Center leadership, serve as a lead for the Center’s website; develop, write, and edit accessible online and print publications about processes and supports; assist with the creation and dissemination of emails, newsletters, and annual reports for the Lab and the Center.
  • Assist with annual banquet, disability awareness week, and other office programs and outreach efforts.

Service to Student Life and the University

  • Actively represent the Accessibility Center and Lab in office and divisional activities and provide expertise and leadership to University constituents regarding best practices, policies, and procedures related to the mission and vision of the Center.

Professional Development

  • Maintain a working knowledge of current disability-related civil rights laws applicable to higher education (e.g., 504) through ongoing staff collaboration and professional development. Assist in ensuring that there is institutional compliance with all related mandates pertaining to nondiscrimination and equal access for students with disabilities.
  • Maintain and expand a working knowledge of technology related to accessibility, trends in disability software and equipment, and advancements in accessibility services in the industry.


Education/Experience

Minimum education/experience required: Bachelor’s Degree and 2 years experience working with assistive technology accommodations OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred: Master’s degree in related field or 6 years of relevant experience.


Skills, abilities, knowledge, licenses, certifications:

  • Demonstrated and proven ability to learn and apply new software programs, advanced computer and technical skills.
  • Experience in database management and development.
  • Experience providing and creating alternate format materials, accessible electronic text, tactile materials, and/or braille.
  • Experience working with students in the postsecondary setting
  • Experience with captioning and/or video description technology.
