This is what you will do:
The Associate Director, Search & Evaluation will identify and evaluate new Business Development opportunities and may assist with or lead diligence and completion of M&A, collaborations, in-licensing, and out-licensing transactions across the rare disease space. The role is responsible for identification of inorganic growth opportunities that will advance the strategic objectives and business goals of Alexion AstraZeneca Rare Disease. In addition to drafting and negotiating term sheets, proposals, partnering agreements and licenses, the role supports the generation of therapeutic area (TAs) strategies and implementation in conjunction with the TA R&D and Commercial colleagues. The Associate Director, Strategic Evaluation utilizes a strong scientific to conduct assessments of the strength of each prospective opportunity. The role plays a key role in purposeful growth and development of Alexion’s future pipeline.
You will be responsible for:
Identifies, investigates, analyzes, and forms third-party relationships that create mutually beneficial business partnerships:
- Assesses scientific data and hypothesis, research plans and expected outcomes to qualify opportunities in alignment with Alexion’s scientific, financial, and business objectives.
- Applies rigor to identify and assess issues that may impact the direction of the pipeline; weighs the potential and risks of each opportunity, and makes recommendations on opportunities to pursue
- Throughout the evaluation process, manages and tracks the data room, ensures appropriate protocols and disclosures; directs cross-functional teams on the completion of activities to support the information gathering, financial modeling, business evaluation and forecasting necessary to support the scientific evaluation of each scenario.
- Collaborates with partners in Commercial, Research & Development, Legal, Finance, and Global Operations to ensure alignment of activities and business needs.
- Finds prospective buyers, prepares data room and sales pitch, point of contact to external parties in out licensing process
- Drafts, reviews, and edits transaction documents including CDAs, term sheets, and contracts while ensuring Alexion compliance and quality requirements are fulfilled (in partnership with Legal)
- Negotiates key terms and critical items for both buy-side and sell-side opportunities
- Collaborates with cross-functional teams to provide strategic and business input including competitive intelligence, risk/gap identification, and internal program alignment with corporate and business development strategy and execution.
- Presents business case for deals to senior leadership and is responsible for representing Alexion to external parties such as investment bankers and venture capital.
- Builds strong relationships within the academic, industry associations, pharmaceutical and biotechnology communities to bring awareness of the company’s interests and capabilities.
- Represents Alexion at industry and academic conventions and conferences.
- Supports the Alliance and Integration Management team to ensure a smooth transition to a partnered program pre- and post-deal close.
You will need to have:
- Advanced degree in a scientific field; MD or PhD in life sciences.
- At least 2 years of research and/or development or medical/patient care experience within a related field or equivalent combination of education and biotech/pharma experience in a business development role or healthcare investing, either venture capital or public investing
- Strong project management skills to ensure integration of multiple work streams, to manage data flow and confidentiality to ensure completion of rigorous evaluation within established timeframes.
- Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
- Strong presentation skills to deliver recommendations and frame business case consideration to senior stakeholders internally and externally.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated track record and ability to drive results as an effective a team member
- Must demonstrate an energy and enthusiasm which brings a positive approach to all challenges.
- Sense of ethics and responsibility.
- Ability to travel as required to meet business needs.
- The duties of this role are generally conducted in an office environment. - Experience in business development and licensing, including a broad understanding of the scientific, financial, commercial, and legal dimensions that support the evaluation process.
- Strong relationship building / networking skills.
- Excellent problem solving, organizational, and negotiating skills.
- Rare disease experience
- Demonstrated excellence in scientific evaluation.
