Arlington County's Department of Environmental Services (DES) is currently seeking experienced Automotive Mechanics to fill multiple vacancies in the heavy section within the Auto Equipment Bureau. The Equipment Bureau provides maintenance and repair services to County equipment and fleet vehicles such as: heavy fire equipment, dump trucks, utility trucks, school buses, passenger vehicles, snow-related equipment and other miscellaneous heavy equipment used by Arlington County. These mechanics are responsible for performing preventive maintenance work and routine corrective repairs on all County and school vehicles. Vacancies are available on the evening work shift. These positions report to the Trades Manager/Leader I.
Specific duties for Auto Mechanic I include:
Inspecting vehicular equipment;- Performing corrective and preventive maintenance;
- Troubleshooting and diagnosing repair work on mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems using diagnostic scanning tools;
- Repairing or replacing tires for all types of equipment;
- Operating shop equipment and vehicles such as the tire machine, computerized tire balance, fork lift and wrecker;
- Performing Virginia State Safety Inspections on vehicles; and
- Transporting vehicles and heavy equipment.
- Troubleshooting and diagnosing repair work on mechanical, hydraulic, air conditioning, air brake systems, and electrical systems to include multiplex systems using diagnostic scanning tools;
- Training new mechanics and assigning and reviewing work during the absence of the supervisor;
- Determining scope and sequence of repairs required;
- Providing repair feasibility recommendations on transmissions or related components;
- Performing Virginia State Safety Inspections on vehicles;
- Inspecting vehicular equipment; and
- Performing related and other duties as required.

Note: Current vacancies exist in the heavy section for Auto Mechanic I and II. Candidates will be placed in appropriate level based on qualifications, licensure, and experience. This recruitment may be used to fill comparable vacancies that occur within the department.
Minimum Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent; plus- Mechanic I - One (1) year of experience in motor vehicle repair.
- Mechanic II - Three (3) years of experience in motor vehicle repair.
Additionally, all positions must possess, or obtain within specified timeframe:
- Virginia Safety Inspector License; and
- Class "A" or "B" Commercial Driver's License and required endorsements (See special requirements).
Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with specified certification/licensure and mechanical experience in one or more of the following:
- Repairing diesel engines (Cummins, Caterpillar, Detroit or International), transmissions, or hydraulic systems;
- Performing computerized diagnostic testing to troubleshoot complex engine, mechanical, or electrical problems;
- School bus maintenance and repair;
- Emergency vehicle repair on fire trucks, fire apparatus and medic units;
- Performing computerized diagnostic testing to troubleshoot complex engine, mechanical, or electrical problems;
- Training other mechanics;
- Performing Virginia State safety inspections; and/or
- Possession of National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications, CDL "A" or "B" licensure with endorsements, and/or VA State Safety Inspector License.
- The applicant must possess a valid Driver license and authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide, a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record.
- Applicant must possess or obtain within specified time frames of appointment:
- Class "A" or "B" Commercial Driver's License within the first six (6) months of employment;
- Hazardous materials endorsement (H), Tank vehicle endorsement (N), School Bus endorsement (S) and Passenger Carrying endorsement (P) for the CDL within the first nine (9) months of employment;
- VA State Safety Inspector License within the first twelve (12) months of employment.
- After obtaining CDL and required endorsements H, N, S and P, applicant must be willing to work on and operate the County-owned 2600 gallon fuel truck as requested by the Operations Supervisor.
- Applicants must provide written consent for Arlington County to obtain from previous employers' information required by Department of Transportation (DOT) agency regulations concerning drug and alcohol testing information.
- Prior to the time of appointment, the successful applicant must pass a pre-employment alcohol breath test and drug screening, and will be subject to drug screening, at such times during employment, as required by federal, state and local standards and policies.
- Applicants must be willing to maintain hand and diagnostic tools required by the trade, work in awkward or cramped positions for long periods of time, and in an environment that includes exposure to noise, odors, dust, grease and dirt with extended periods of standing, walking, bending, crouching and lifting light to very heavy objects and equipment.
- Must have ability to exert up to 75 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
NOTE:
- Anyone hired without the VA State Certified Safety Inspector License, or the Commercial Driver's License and required endorsements must obtain the permit/license within the specified time frame.
- Once obtained, the CDL and VA State Certified Safety Inspector Licenses must be kept in good standing throughout the duration of the employment.
A pre-employment criminal records check may be conducted. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.

Work Hours: Must be available to work PM Shift, Monday through Friday, 2:15 p.m. to 10:45 p.m. Hours may be subject to change. Seasonal overtime and available for call-back in emergencies required.
The salary listed at the top of the announcement reflects the range for the entry of Auto Mechanic I, to the maximum for the Auto Mechanic II for full performance employees.
The salary range for the Auto Mechanic I:
$55,473.60 - $84,739.20 annually.
The salary range for the Auto Mechanic II:
$60,777.60 - $92,788.80
