Position will be filled as either Engineering Associate or Engineering Coordinator based on candidate qualifications and interview evaluation. To be considered for different job classification levels, candidate must apply for each position interested in.

Position Summary:

University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics department of Bioengineering is seeking an Engineering Coordinator to manage equipment maintenance responsibilities for higher acuity departments and serves as the primary contact for those areas. Maintains equipment requiring extensive knowledge and specialized training, categorized as high-risk, or is composed of interconnected complex devices. Manages installation, upgrade and repair projects for equipment related to their area of expertise. Responds to after-hours troubleshooting and repair calls.

  • Evaluates the repair, installation, and maintenance requirements needed to complete projects related to medical equipment within their responsibility
  • Has a working understanding of project management terms and methods to be used in relation to equipment maintenance installations, upgrades and recalls.
  • Completes installation, repairs, and planned maintenance tasks of specialized and complex and high acuity equipment in accordance with local and national public safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Documents actions taken.
  • Monitors equipment maintenance schedules
  • Orders replacement service items needed for upcoming maintenance
  • Prioritizes work to complete equipment maintenance on schedule and to established manufacturer or institutional standards.
  • Exhibits a detailed understanding of equipment supported.
  • Provides advanced support of high acuity departments and equipment used in direct patient care.
  • Has in depth understanding of the operations and environments they support.
  • Has in-depth understanding of common clinical terminology as well as that of life sciences such as anatomy and physiology.
  • Adept at responding to emergency callbacks and after-hours phone support
  • Can fully communicate the use of devices supported and capable of communicating technical concepts and problems to a variety of technical and non-technical personnel.
  • Capable of providing support solutions to customer service issues and complaints.
  • Proficient at learning on the job as well as teaching and mentoring others.
  • Considered a technical expert in specialty area and can mentor others within that specialty.
  • Able to provide accurate repair and maintenance cost estimates to customers.

Salary: $64,000 to commensurate

Education Required

Bachelor’s in Biomedical, Electronics technology, or related field or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.

Required Qualifications

  • Relevant experience, typically 1-3 years, troubleshooting, repairing, and testing electro-mechanical equipment.
  • Experience communicating technical information effectively to technical and non-technical staff verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated job-related experience and/or commitment to diversity in the work/academic environment.
  • Driver's license and ability to meet the University of Iowa Fleet Services program rules and regulations, due to the ability to drive University vehicles.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience working as Biomedical Equipment Technician within a large academic health care setting.
  • Experience maintaining ventilators or other critical care medical devices.
  • Experience maintaining Philips PIICiX central monitoring systems and MX series patient monitors.
  • Experience collaborating with technical and non-technical staff on system and equipment implementation projects.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with basic project management.
