Job Purpose and Objectives
Safely Operates ADA accessible vehicles to transport passengers for Reno County Area Transportation (RCAT) as part of at U.S.C. 49-5311 rural transportation grant. Operator will provide limited physical assistance for passengers to, from, and while on the bus as needed. Operator will work a flexible schedule on Fixed Route and Para transit busses within the city of Hutchinson and South Hutchinson, and Specialized Transportation service passenger vans within Reno County and to regional service connection points. Operator will transport the public of all ages, physical and cognitive abilities. Job Competencies
Complies with all countywide and departmental policies and procedures. Obeys all traffic laws while driving vehicle. Drives vehicle defensively. Consistently maintains assigned time schedule. Communicates using an 800 MHz two-way radio. Receives assignments and direction from dispatch. Follows departmental procedure for transporting wheelchair passengers. Responsible for reconciliation of fare receipts. Aids paratransit passengers. Assists paratransit passengers with packages per department policy and procedure. Inspects vehicle as required by department policy and procedure. Maintains adequate fluid levels. Maintains vehicle in a clean and safe manner including washing and cleaning vehicle. Maintains daily records and logs as required in department policy and procedures. Report accidents or incidents immediately using appropriate procedure and paperwork. Advises Safety Maintenance Coordinator when vehicle needs repairs or non-scheduled maintenance. Confers with dispatch if passenger is perceived to be unsafe to transport (i.e., sick, injured, intoxicated). Protects and maintains any confidential information, whether oral, written, or electronic. Operates all job-related equipment, machinery, tools and other aids as required or needed. Position Requirements and Qualifications
Skills / Knowledge / Abilities - Possesses a thorough knowledge of Hutchinson and South Hutchinson city streets. Is alert, self-reliant, and demonstrates good judgment. Ability to meet attendance schedules, which may include Saturdays, some holidays, and provide coverage for other employees on leave time. Must be available to be called into work outside of regular business hours during natural disasters or emergency situations. Ability to perform safe driving techniques in all weather conditions. Ability to interact courteously with the public and provide accurate route information. Ability to interact with a variety of people in a positive and effective manner among whom may be afflicted with acute/chronic health conditions, frail health, dementia/Alzheimer"s, Bipolar, mental illness or other cognitive disabilities or dysfunctions. Ability to assist people of all levels of physical and mental ability effectively and safely. Ability to safely operate bus lift, secure oxygen tanks, wheelchairs and other assistive devices or equipment. Ability to listen and to effectively communicate with passengers, co-workers, and department administration. Ability to use good decision-making skills during the performance of routine and emergency work situations. Certifications / Licenses - Must possess a valid Kansas driver"s license. Commercial Driver"s License (CDL) Class C with passenger endorsement desired. Must possess a Department of Transportation Medical Certificate or obtain one upon employment. Position Requirements - One (1) to three (3) years of experience driving professionally, transporting passengers and/or driving/transporting professionally desired.
