SUMMARY
This position is responsible for making decisions on business loan applications through Scored Only or Scored Plus analysis, within delegated lending limit. Ideal candidate must be skilled in proposing, negotiating, and approving credit and loan structures. Demonstrate strong relationship building skills to educate branch sales personnel and collaborate with commercial relationship managers. This position will follow established guidelines, procedures, and will have strong knowledge of credit policy, bank products and commercial financial analysis. May also assist with portfolio management duties as assigned.
This position reports to the Underwriter Team Lead or Underwriting Manager and has delegated lending authority within our Commercial Lending team.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: other duties may be assigned.
  • Responsible for making accurate decisions in granting loan requests within specified limits (up to $500,000, with opportunity to increase up to $750,000 with future business line expansion). Refers and recommends loans above approval limits to a senior underwriter/team lead/manager.
  • Evaluates basic to complex business loan applications by applying a thorough knowledge of credit policy, guidelines, and procedures.
  • Displays thorough knowledge of fair lending issues, rules and various regulations that directly impact commercial lending.
  • Spreads business and personal financial statements and/or tax returns in the loan origination system.
  • Analyzes the credit worthiness of existing and prospective commercial clients by reviewing financial statements and tax returns and evaluating their ability to repay.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of credit scoring, financial statements, traditional business, and industry credit analysis and risk management concepts. Exhibits the ability to utilize objective scoring tools and apply subjective criteria to render decisions. Will use a combination of scoring acumen and traditional financial statement analysis to underwrite structure and decision the credit request.
  • Documents all supporting analysis and/or credit decisions in loan decisioning software and through detailed credit presentation.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform in a dynamic production environment and meet unit productivity goals.
  • May calculate borrower probability of default ratings and/or loss given default ratings as part of financial analysis.
  • Analyzes various industries and is knowledgeable of the risks associated with those industries. Assesses the risks inherent in each industry and factors those risks into credit decisions.
  • Seeks alternative means of financing or counter offers within defined guidelines for all applicants when it is determined that the original request cannot be accommodated.
  • Ensures compliance with all internal underwriting policies, procedures, and audit standards working closely with cross-departmental teams within Credit Risk Management and Credit Review.
  • Communicates effectively and interacts with all levels of internal clients and management, with ability to influence others by persuasively presenting thoughts and ideas to gain commitment for proposed ideas and solutions.
  • Performs job responsibilities in accordance with established service level agreements.
The ideal candidate:
  • Demonstrates ability to perform in a dynamic production environment and meet unit productivity goals.
  • Must have the ability to develop and maintain internal and external relationships with individuals such as Relationship Managers, Credit Officers, and Risk Management Personnel.
  • Must be skilled in proposing, negotiating, and approving credit and loan structures.
  • Excellent understanding of credit scoring including determining factors, changing parameters, and impact on overall corporate goals.
  • Excellent analytical skills and understanding of financial statement analysis, key financial ratios and credit evaluation methods.
  • Thorough working knowledge of policies, procedures and federal regulations related to BBL Underwriting Group functions.
  • Strong understanding of BBL operations (application processing, underwriting, loan closing and portfolio management), compliance requirements (internal and external), and regulatory guidelines (state and federal).
  • Thorough knowledge of industries and inherent risks associated with those industries.
  • Demonstrated understanding of risk management concepts.
  • Excellent working knowledge of loan accounting and deposit systems.
  • Strong computer skills including enterprise applications and PC skills – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university, preferably in a business discipline, Finance or equivalent six plus (6+) year(s) experience in business and/or commercial lending, underwriting or portfolio management. Demonstrated knowledge of business cash flow, credit, evaluating collateral, financial statement spreading and analysis. Able to make timely decisions in a fast paced, production environment. Good oral and written communication skills. Solid knowledge of federal regulations, and bank policies and procedures. Excellent skills with personal computers and related software packages.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand and sit. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
We offer a competitive total compensation package including base salary and benefits. The pay range for this position is $53,954 to $89,023 per year (in CO & WA), and depends on a variety of non-discriminatory factors including, but not limited to, job-related knowledge, skills and experience, education, and geographic location.
