The Business Development Associate will provide technical and programmatic support for the planning and implementation of activities throughout the business development cycle. This includes:

  • As a member of the proposal teams, support the Positioning/Proposal Manager and Proposal Technical Lead in the positioning and development of high quality proposals;
  • Manage small scale proposals, concept papers, and other new business initiatives; and,
  • Support capacity building for Home Office and Country staff on relevant business development topics.

Essential Job Functions

  • Opportunity Monitoring and Research: Regular monitoring and internal dissemination of relevant new business opportunities; and conducting research and analysis on donors, competitors, partners, and country context to information new opportunity assessment.
  • Bid Positioning: Support the Proposal Manager and Proposal Technical Lead in all positioning efforts for specific bid opportunities, working on all aspects of partnering, staffing, and technical strategies. This includes, among others:
    • Support partner negotiations, including coordination of scope of work development and handling of pre-teaming agreements and teaming agreements;
    • Support planning for and participate in development of proposal technical strategy prior to bid release; manage communications with partners related to the positioning effort; and,
    • Participate in positioning trips as assigned.
  • Proposal Development. This includes:
    • Serving in the proposal coordinator role, support Proposal Manager with proposal team and partner management, monitoring proposal interim and other deadlines, etc.; collaborate closely with proposal team members to anticipate and resolve issues/roadblocks that cause delays;
    • Manage partner communications during proposal development, as assigned;
    • Assist with planning for and participate in proposal technical strategy workshops;
    • Conduct background technical research to inform development of the technical strategy;
    • Assist with drafting of proposal sections such as organization capacity, past performance, staffing, CVs, etc.;
    • Develop proposal annexes, with inputs from proposal technical lead; coordinate with communications team to develop infographics, diagrams, etc. for the proposal;
    • Coordinate with budget lead in development of proposal budget;
    • Working with HR and the technical lead to support the recruitment of proposal key staff;
    • As assigned, coordinate several rounds of reviews of proposal drafts by internal and external reviewers, and ensure version control;
    • When relevant, provide technical inputs to proposal drafts; proofread and copy-edit technical proposal drafts; and,
    • Manage production and submission of proposals, ensuring compliance with procurement requirements.

Desired Qualifications

  • BA/BS in international development, public health, or related field; Master’s degree would be an advantage;
  • At least one year of relevant work experience, including in international development and/or a public health field;
  • Strong computer skills (in the MS Office suite); proven ability in formatting and layout of complex documents; advanced knowledge of Excel spreadsheets;
  • Strong writing and editing skills;
  • Strong research skills; ability to gather, analyze, and synthesize large amounts of data/information to draw conclusion and inform decision making;
  • Excellent diplomacy, cross-cultural, interpersonal, and communication skills;
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills; ability to work proactively, to prioritize workload, to adapt to frequently changing priorities, and to meet strict deadlines with great attention to detail;
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented environment;
  • Experience working effectively under time constraints and ability to handle multiple priorities in a high-stress environment of business development;
  • Fluency in English required; working ability in French, Spanish, and/or Portuguese would be an advantage; and,
  • Individual must be authorized to work in the U.S.
