JOB SUMMARY: Under pharmacist supervision, assists in the day-to-day purchasing operations of the pharmacy with emphasis on materials management. Person is responsible for the maintenance of appropriate inventory levels of pharmaceuticals in all areas to meet the needs of the Pharmacy Department, patients, nursing units and other ancillary departments of Mercy, as well as non-pharmaceutical materials used in the Pharmacy Department,. He/she is also responsible for maintaining a free-of- expired medications pharmacy department. Adheres to Mercy Hospital/department policies and procedures and JCAHO/regulatory agency requirements. Demonstrates and promotes service excellence at all times, with an emphasis on medication safety.
Key responsibilities include:
- Prepares and transmits pharmacy drug order to wholesaler daily
- Maintains department established par level
- Verifies invoices for correctness/accuracy, processes them
- Acts as a liaison with pharmacy purchasing and pharmacy vendors
- Filing and reconciling documents, paperwork and purchase orders
- Processes invoices in a timely manner
- Handles emergency requisition of pharmaceuticals, borrowing from and lending drugs to other institutions
- Consults with Pharmacy Management in handling shortages
- Coordinates ordering of vaccines for VFC (Vaccines for children program)
- Maintains appropriate floor stock par levels in storeroom with good organization
- Performs physical inventory of high volume, high cost selected pharmaceuticals as assigned
- Receives wholesaler order, puts medications away and be able to lift up to 20 lbs
ï‚· Orders/retrieves medications from the storeroom to have all areas of the pharmacy properly stocked, while maintaining Pharmacy storeroom in and orderly fashion
ï‚· Communicates materials issues to pharmacist responsible for the area/next shift
- Participates in departmental meetings
- Maintains a good working relationship with peers, pharmacists, nursing staff and other employees.
- Basic knowledge of 340B program, purchasing consistency needed and the ability to split purchase orders.
- Completes special assignments/projects as requested
ï‚· Assists in preparing for all regulatory surveys
ï‚· Works within approved NYS Board of Pharmacy regulations as a non-licensed person.
- Assists Pharmacy Administration with initiation and development of new pharmacy processes, programs, and services.
- Has ability to handle hazardous substances when required, and able to use Pharmacy Department safety devices, procedures, and protocols when handling.
Qualifications include:
• High School Diploma or equivalent required
• Experience working in a hospital or community pharmacy preferred
