Description of Duties:
Security, Patrol, & Enforcement
- Inspects buildings and grounds to observe and secure facilities against fire and other situations of potential loss to NCSSM-Morganton.
- Admits and releases authorized persons, removes unauthorized persons and provides access control for approved personnel.
- Responds, investigates, and documents disturbances and/or incidents, takes necessary and appropriate actions to maintain order, safety and to protect property. Cooperates with campus staff and external law enforcement agencies while conducting investigations. Testifies in court, if applicable or required.
- Provides escort services as requested for students and visitors to NCSSM-Morganton facilities and parking lots.
- Participates in campus-wide events that enhance the Campus Safety Department’s interaction and visibility amongst the campus community.
- Performs special assignments including staffing of external/internal events and protecting NCSSM-Morganton equipment and property.
- Is required to operate NCSSM-Morganton vehicles including, but not limited to vans, UTV’s, and any other motorized vehicles safely.
Data Analysis/Reports
Modify, retrieve and track incident, hazard, statistical and other data, and to compose and prepare correspondence, surveys, memoranda, routine reports and other written material.
This position is mandatory/essential to school operations and required to be on site during inclement weather, natural disasters, and other emergency conditions, and during campus closings.
Selected candidates must have the ability to achieve active CPR certification within the first 12 months of employment. First Aid and First Responder certs are preferred.
Selected candidates must have or be able to obtain within six months a valid North Carolina Driver's license in good standing. Must be insurable.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Technical Knowledge: Understanding of protective, security, and enforcement practices. Knowledge and skill in basic first aid. Ability to apply considerable knowledge of property security and enforcement procedures. Proficiency in using a variety of security and enforcement equipment, which may include parking meters, vehicle boots, gates, alarm panels, radios, cameras, and electronic ticketing devices. Ability to use the full functionality of security/surveillance systems.
Security, Patrol, & Enforcement: Ability to patrol, monitor, and guard interior and exterior areas with a higher assessed risk. Ability to ascend/descend stairs. Ability to issue warnings or citations. Ability to assist in emergency response. Ability to provide support for special events; ability to control and direct traffic of people and vehicles; ability to erect barricades; ability to provide motorist assistance.
Decision Making: Ability to analyze situations in order to make quick, sound decisions; ability to recognize critical incidents; ability to initiate action based upon acquired information and knowledge of operating procedures.
Communication: Ability to listen and understand messages and instructions from others. Ability to gather information as needed. Ability to transmit radio messages using established protocols and procedures. Ability to provide routine responses to general requests for information. Ability to maintain logs and records. Ability to acquire basic understanding of working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and emergency response personnel, and the general public.
Minimum Education and Experience:
High School diploma or equivalency and demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Team NCSSM Benefits:
Vacation: Earn from 14 days to 26 days per year based on years of state service. Leave is earned monthly.
Sick Leave: 12 days per year.

Tuition Waiver: Three courses per academic year tuition free (at any of UNC 17 campuses that offer courses) for permanent full-time employees contributing to the retirement system. Under Educational Assistance, tuition reimbursement may be available for attendance at Community Colleges provided courses taken pertain to current job or upgrades current job skills.

Community Service: 24 hours leave credited each calendar year (prorated for part-time) unless you choose the Mentoring/ tutoring option – 1 hour each week up to a max of 36 hours that schools are in session as documented by the elected board of the local education agency or the governing authority of any non-public school.
