The Narragansett Indian Health Center has an immediate opening for a Certified Medical Assistant.

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for prioritization of patient flow through clinical process.
  • Greets, screens, and schedules patients and obtains, verifies, and updates patient information, verifying insurance coverage and patient demographics; managing and updating charts to ensure that information is complete and filed appropriately.
  • Schedules patients for offsite clinic, hospital, and other ancillary medical treatments and tests;
  • Fulfills clerical responsibilities as assigned that may include sending/receiving patient medical records; pre-certifications; authorizations; obtaining lab/X-ray reports, hospital/specialists’ consultation notes, completing forms/requisitions as needed;
  • Prepare exam rooms for patient examinations and keep the rooms neat and clean.
  • Show patients to examination rooms and prepare them for the provider.
  • Interview patients to obtain medical information and measure their vital signs, weight, height and records patients' medical history, vital statistics, chief complaint, and information such as test results in EHR.
  • Document all other appropriate information in the EHR.
  • Handles protected health information (PHI) in a manner consistent with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) i.e., applies the highest degree of accuracy with all written, spoken, and typed information.
  • Respond to providers requests, prioritize and complete as requested.
  • Collect blood, tissue or other laboratory specimens, log the specimens, and prepare them for testing. Must be able to successfully draw blood.
  • Uses universal blood and body fluid precautions at all times and personal protective equipment as needed.
  • Performs a variety of office-based testing and treatments related to patient care under the supervision of a clinician including but not limited to vision, hearing, and lifting tests.
  • Communicate with the patient's provider verbally, about their schedule.
  • Contacts patients when required and is available by phone for patient questions/concerns
  • Take direction and secure guidance or help from the RN as needed.
  • Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets, or physicians' instructions to patients.
  • Clean and sterilize instruments and dispose of contaminated supplies.
  • Perform general office duties, such as answering telephones, and completing insurance forms.
  • Completing pre-authorizations and prior-authorizations.
  • Maintain ongoing tracking and appropriate documentation of referrals.
  • Review details and expectations about referrals with patients.
  • Assist patients in problem solving potential issues regarding their healthcare.
  • Refers patients and families to in-house services, (e.g., Behavioral Health, Community Health, Purchased and Referred Care, pharmacy/medical staff).
  • Perform required behavioral health and other screenings as part of rooming patients.
  • Inventory and submit order requests for medical, lab, office supplies or equipment.
  • Attend and actively participate in training's and other meetings as assigned.
  • Prepare and submit reports as required.
  • Adhere to policies and procedures and HIPAA rules and regulations
  • Other duties as assigned within scope of practice.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • At least two years’ experience in health care setting, required
  • Knowledge of referral process and insurance companies, required
  • Medical terminology knowledge, required
  • Electronic Health Record experience, required
  • CPR certification, required
  • Recent experience as a certified Medical Assistant, required
  • Phlebotomy certification and recent experience with lab draws, strongly preferred
  • Medical Assistant certification from an accredited institution, required
  • Experience working in a community health center, strongly preferred
  • Experience with office medical procedures and treatments, required
  • Strong computer skills, including the ability to work with medical software, required
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills to deal with a wide variety of individuals and to achieve understanding and acceptance, required
  • Ability to manage multiple changing priorities in an effective and organized fashion, required
  • Basic math and problem-solving skills, required
  • Ability to: perform work accurately with attention to detail within specified time periods; work in a team environment; adapt to performing multiple tasks; prioritize orders, required

NIHC is a tribal FQHC owned and operated by the Narragansett Indian Tribe (NIT).

Knowledge of history, culture, and health needs of Native American and Alaskan Native communities preferred. NIT practices Indian Preference Hiring, AA/EEO. Position is subject to successful background investigation. As part of the pre-employment process, a fingerprint check and drug-screening are required. The federal government regulates drugs through the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) (21 U.S.C. § 811), which does not recognize the difference between medical and recreational use of marijuana. Under federal law, marijuana is treated like every other controlled substance, such as cocaine and heroin and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) still classifies it as Schedule 1 drug. Therefore, any use of marijuana will disqualify an applicant for employment with the NIT/NIHC.
